Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the luxury hotel was a masterpiece of modern opulence, bathed entirely in brilliant, cinematic daylight. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows allowed the crisp, natural sun to pour across the room, ensuring there was absolutely no trace of a dull or yellow tint in the air. The bright, vivid colors of the pristine white walls, the towering white-flower aisle markers, and the polished marble floor gleamed with expensive perfection. The guests, an assembly of elite white American adults dressed in impeccable formalwear, mingled in the flawless daylight. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with health and generational wealth. Crisp American accents floated over the soft, classical music, creating a sophisticated hum that masked the underlying, cutthroat tension of a Mafia syndicate wedding.
Standing near the front of the ballroom, Victoria Ashford looked like a vision of high-society perfection. At twenty-eight years old, the bride wore a breathtakingly elaborate bridal gown, layered with imported lace and heavy silk. Thick, flawless diamond jewelry rested against her fair, rosy collarbone, and a massive engagement ring sparkled fiercely on her left hand. Yet, despite her flawless appearance, her expression was twisted into a mask of bitter, restless impatience.
"Where is he, Father?" Victoria demanded, her voice sharp and entirely devoid of bridal joy. "The ceremony is supposed to begin in less than ten minutes. Adrian should be standing at the altar, not hiding in the groom's lounge."
Richard Ashford, her fifty-eight-year-old father, stood beside her. As an allied-family capo, he possessed a commanding, dangerous presence. He wore a crisp, formal three-piece suit, a heavy signet ring, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. He reached out and gently patted his daughter’s arm, though his eyes scanned the room with cold calculation.
"Patience, Victoria," Richard replied smoothly, his deep American accent carrying the weight of seasoned authority. "Adrian is a meticulous man. He is likely taking a final moment with his capos. This wedding is merging our two empires. The Hale family does not do anything without careful consideration. He will be here."
"He had better be," Victoria snapped, adjusting her diamond earrings with a huff of irritation. "I did not spend six months orchestrating this entire alliance just to be left standing near a wedding-card cabinet like a fool. I want the photographer ready the second he walks through those doors."
"Everything is going exactly to plan, my dear," Richard assured her, a calculating smile touching his lips. "By tonight, you will be Victoria Hale. And our family will have the permanent leverage we require."
Before Victoria could reply, a sudden, bizarre disruption caused the nearby guests to fall completely silent.
Stepping out from behind a towering white-flower aisle marker was a tiny, dirty figure that fundamentally did not belong in the pristine ballroom. It was a four-year-old girl named Clara Marlowe. She wore a dusty, faded formal flower-girl dress that had clearly seen better days, and her small, worn flats scuffed against the polished marble. Her fair, rosy cheeks were streaked with dirt and dried tears. In her fragile arms, she tightly held eight-month-old baby Mia, who was wrapped in a simple white baby outfit and a soft blanket.
Victoria stared at the child, her eyes widening in absolute, unadulterated horror as the little girl stumbled directly into the center of the immaculate wedding aisle.

"What in God's name is this?" Victoria hissed, stepping forward. "Where is security? Get this filthy street rat out of my ballroom immediately!"
Clara looked up, her blue eyes wide with fear, but she held her baby sister tighter against her chest, her small hand clutching a faded photograph inside her dusty pocket.
