Chapter 7

The bright, natural colors of the ballroom seemed to freeze in the wake of Victoria's devastating fall. The pristine white envelopes and decorative gift boxes lay scattered across the polished marble, framing the weeping, defeated bride. The wealthy American guests were completely paralyzed, pressing themselves back against the walls, terrified to even breathe. To witness the head of the Hale family physically destroy the Ashford leadership in a matter of seconds was a paradigm-shifting event.

Adrian stood in the center of the white-flower aisle, his chest rising and falling with slow, perfectly controlled breaths. He slowly lowered his tattooed hand, flexing his fingers. His dark tuxedo was perfectly intact. He did not even glance at the weeping woman buried in the wedding cards.

He turned his back on her, a profound gesture of ultimate disrespect.

Adrian slowly dropped to one knee on the marble floor, positioning himself directly in front of the trembling four-year-old girl. His cold, sharp eyes softened entirely, the terrifying Mafia Boss vanishing to reveal a fiercely protective father.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked softly, his American accent warm and incredibly gentle.

"No," Clara whispered, her bright blue eyes wide with awe as she looked at the towering man who had just saved her. She held baby Mia securely against her chest; the infant had remained remarkably quiet throughout the chaos, nestled safely in her sister's arms.

"You were very brave to come here," Adrian murmured, gently brushing a smudge of dirt from Clara’s fair, rosy cheek. "Where is your mother, Clara? Where is Elena?"

Tears instantly welled back up in the little girl's eyes. She bit her lower lip, her small shoulders shaking. "Mommy is sick, Daddy. She is really, really sick. The bad men came to our apartment. She told me to run out the back stairs and find the big hotel. She said... she said only you could keep Mia safe."

The words struck Adrian like a physical blow. Elena was in danger. She had hidden the children for years to protect them from his violent world, only to send them directly into the fire when she could no longer fight.

Clara sniffled and reached down with her free hand. She reached into the small, dusty pocket of her faded flower-girl dress. Her tiny fingers emerged holding a thick, slightly crumpled, sealed envelope.

The bright cinematic light caught the stark, bold handwriting on the front of the paper.

Clara extended her small arm, handing the envelope directly to Adrian.

Adrian took it carefully. He looked at the front. Written in Elena’s unmistakable, hurried handwriting were the words:

ADRIAN HALE — ONLY.

"She said to give this to you," Clara whispered, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "She said it explains everything."

From across the room, amidst the scattered gift boxes and envelopes, Victoria pushed herself up onto her elbows. Her elegant bridal gown was ruined, her face swelling an angry, dark purple. She saw the sealed envelope in Adrian’s hand, and her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing panic.

"Adrian, do not open that!" Victoria shrieked, scrambling frantically on her hands and knees across the marble floor. "It is a lie! Whatever is in there, it is a forgery! My father and I had nothing to do with it!"

Adrian slowly stood up, holding the envelope in his left hand. The terrifying, cold calculation returned to his angular face. The pieces of the puzzle were violently snapping together.
