Chapter 3

The tension in the bright, vividly colored ballroom was suffocating. The guests, usually loud and confident, stood completely paralyzed. No one dared to intervene against the Ashford bride, leaving the tiny, dusty four-year-old kneeling on the floor, weeping as she clutched her baby sister.
Unbeknownst to Victoria, the heavy, polished oak doors of a side ballroom entrance had just swung open.
Adrian Moretti Hale stepped over the threshold, returning from the groom’s lounge. At twenty-nine years old, the powerful Mafia Boss was a vision of deeply masculine, breathtaking authority. He was handsome as a movie star, dressed in a flawlessly tailored black wedding tuxedo that highlighted his broad shoulders. A heavy Hale family signet ring gleamed on his hand, catching the bright, natural cinematic light, alongside a luxury wristwatch. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally slicked back, with a few loose strands falling perfectly over his forehead, creating an undeniably charming, romantic look.
But his eyes were entirely cold. They were sharp, intimidating, and calculating.
Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. His polished shoes made no sound on the floor, but the sheer gravity of his presence instantly altered the atmosphere of the room. He did not look at his bride. His sharp gaze bypassed the towering white-flower aisle markers, the freestanding wedding-card cabinet, and the terrified guests.
His eyes locked entirely onto the small, dusty girl kneeling on the marble floor with an infant in her arms.
"What is the meaning of this?" Catherine Hale, Adrian’s thirty-seven-year-old older sister, asked as she stepped in behind him. She wore an elegant formal gown and heavy jewelry, her fair, rosy face reflecting profound confusion.
Adrian did not answer her. He took a slow, measured step forward into the aisle.
The movement caught Clara’s eye. The little girl, tears streaming through the dirt on her rosy cheeks, looked past the cruel, towering figure of Victoria Ashford. She looked directly at the handsome, intimidating man in the black tuxedo. A spark of absolute, desperate recognition lit up her bright blue eyes.
Clara shifted baby Mia higher against her chest, her tiny voice breaking the agonizing silence of the room.
"Daddy…" Clara sobbed, her American accent trembling with pure, unadulterated heartbreak and relief. "Mommy said I had to find you."
The single word fell into the massive ballroom like a live grenade.
The entire nearby wedding party froze. Victoria’s breath caught violently in her throat, her fair skin turning a sickly, translucent white. Richard Ashford stiffened, his hand instinctively dropping toward the inside of his formal three-piece suit. Catherine Hale gasped, bringing a jeweled hand to her mouth in utter shock.
Adrian became completely, terrifyingly still.
The charming, slightly romantic aesthetic of the loose hair falling over his forehead was starkly juxtaposed against the apocalyptic, murderous intent that instantly flooded his cold, sharp eyes. He did not look at Victoria. He did not look at Richard. He stared at the little girl, processing the impossibility of her words, the familiar shade of her eyes, and the desperate, heartbreaking truth hidden beneath the dust on her cheeks.
"Adrian, it is a trick!" Victoria shrieked, panic finally shattering her cold superiority. She rushed toward him, her bridal gown swishing loudly. "She is a beggar! Someone hired her to ruin our day! Security, remove her!"
"Do not," Adrian commanded.

He spoke incredibly slowly, keeping his volume terrifyingly low. The controlled pauses between his words carried a measured, cold, and absolute danger.
"Do not... let a single person... touch her," Adrian whispered, his eyes locked on the crushed photograph beneath Victoria's heel.
