Chapter 4

The bright cinematic light of the ballroom seemed to sharpen, acting as an unforgiving spotlight on the unfolding disaster. The vibrant colors of the floral arrangements faded into the background as Adrian Moretti Hale slowly walked down the center of the aisle. The guests parted for him in absolute, terrified silence.

Adrian did not look at his frantic bride. He stopped right in front of Victoria, his towering, deeply masculine frame completely dwarfing her. He looked down at the floor, his cold, intimidating eyes fixing on the crushed, faded paper trapped beneath the heel of her bridal shoe.

"Move... your foot," Adrian ordered. His voice was barely a whisper, yet it echoed with lethal authority.

"Adrian, please, it's garbage," Victoria stammered, her American accent cracking with sheer desperation. "Do not let this ruin our alliance!"

Adrian slowly raised his head, his sharp jawline setting into a mask of pure stone. He stared directly into Victoria’s panicked eyes until she physically trembled and took a hasty step backward, pulling her foot away from the photograph.

Adrian crouched down on the polished marble floor, entirely disregarding the immaculate tailoring of his black wedding tuxedo. He gently reached out and retrieved the crushed photograph. He smoothed the creased edges with his thumbs, his large hands moving with deliberate care.

The bright light illuminated the faded image. It showed a beautiful woman with fair, rosy skin, holding a tiny, newborn version of Clara. The woman was Elena Marlowe. And resting clearly against her collarbone, undeniably captured in the photograph, was a distinct, custom-made Hale family pendant—a pendant Adrian had given Elena years earlier before she had mysteriously vanished from his life.

The realization hit Adrian with the kinetic force of a freight train. He wasn't looking at a scam. He was looking at his own blood.

"Adrian," Richard Ashford’s deep, grating voice interrupted the profound silence.

The fifty-eight-year-old allied-family capo stepped aggressively between Adrian and Victoria. Richard’s face was flushed a dark, angry red. He was a man used to absolute respect, and the public humiliation of his daughter was entirely unacceptable.

"You are embarrassing my daughter in front of the entire syndicate," Richard growled, leaning down toward the kneeling Mafia Boss. "I don't care what that piece of trash paper is. You will stand up, you will order security to remove these beggars, and you will walk my daughter down that aisle."

Adrian remained crouched for a long, agonizing second. He carefully slipped the photograph into the inner breast pocket of his tuxedo. He looked at Clara, who was still holding baby Mia, trembling violently.

"You are safe now," Adrian whispered softly to the child, his volume dropping into a warm, paternal register that no one in the room had ever heard before.

Adrian slowly rose to his full height. The warmth instantly vanished, replaced by the apex predator of the criminal underworld. He turned his cold, sharp eyes onto Richard Ashford.

"You... allowed your daughter... to assault my child," Adrian stated, the controlled pauses in his speech stretching like a tightening garrote wire.

"She is a bastard!" Richard roared, his temper completely overriding his diplomatic sense.

In a sudden, violent burst of aggression, Richard stepped forward and violently shoved Adrian backward with both hands. Before Adrian could even shift his weight, Richard followed through, throwing a heavy, brutal punch directly across Adrian’s face. The sickening crack of knuckles against bone echoed through the grand ballroom.
