Chapter 10

The pristine white paper was covered in hurried, desperate handwriting. Adrian smoothed the letter flat on the mahogany desk, the bright light from the desk lamp illuminating Elena’s words. His heart, hardened by years of violence and betrayal, pounded heavily against his ribs.

"Adrian,

If you are reading this, it means my time has run out, but our daughters are safe. I never wanted to leave you. Four years ago, Richard Ashford came to me. He showed me the execution orders for you and your sister. He told me that if I didn't disappear, the Commission would wipe out the Hale family to make room for his own.

He forced me onto a plane. I managed to escape the men he sent to kill me in Europe, and I have been hiding in the city shadows ever since, working to stay off the grid. I didn't know I was pregnant with Clara when I left. Mia came later, a blessing in the dark.

I stayed away because your life depended on the Ashford alliance. But Victoria found me. She knows about the children. She sent a strike team to the apartment tonight. I am leaving this letter with Clara, and I am staying behind to buy them time to run.

Do not mourn me, Adrian. Just protect our girls. Teach them to be strong.

Elena."

Adrian stared at the signature. The paper trembled slightly in his tattooed hands. The sheer magnitude of the Ashford family's treason was staggering. They had orchestrated Elena’s disappearance, threatened his life, and finally attempted to murder his children to secure a wedding.

He carefully folded the letter and placed it into the breast pocket of his tuxedo, right over his heart.

The charming, romantic movie star was gone entirely. The man who stood up from the desk was the apex predator of the American underworld, a father fueled by an apocalyptic, righteous wrath.

Adrian walked out of the groom's lounge. The grand ballroom was in total lockdown. The Ashford soldiers had been disarmed and forced to their knees. Victoria and Richard were huddled together in the center of the room, surrounded by Adrian’s heavily armed capos.

Catherine stood by the doorway, having returned from securing the children. She stared at the envelope pocket on Adrian’s chest, waiting for his command.

"What did they do, Adrian?" Catherine asked softly.

"They made a mistake," Adrian replied, his voice a low, terrifying hum that vibrated through the floorboards.

He walked slowly down the white-flower aisle, his polished shoes crunching over the crushed, faded photograph of Elena. He stopped directly in front of the bleeding, broken Ashford patriarch and the ruined, weeping bride.

"You thought," Adrian whispered, the controlled pauses in his speech dripping with absolute, lethal certainty, "that you could build an empire... on the grave of the woman I love."

"Adrian, please," Richard gasped, spitting blood onto the marble. "We can negotiate."

"We are past negotiation, Richard," Adrian stated coldly. He looked up at his men, his eyes completely devoid of mercy. "Take them to the warehouse at the docks. And assemble the strike teams. We are going to that apartment. If Elena is still alive, we bring her home. If she is dead..."

Adrian looked back down at the terrified bride.

May you like

"I will personally ensure," Adrian promised, "that the Ashford bloodline ends tonight."

The war had officially begun, and Adrian Hale was ready to burn the city to ashes to reclaim his family.
