Chapter 2

The brilliant cinematic lighting of the ballroom offered no shadows to hide the sudden, ugly confrontation. The bright, vivid colors of Victoria’s pristine white bridal gown contrasted violently with the dusty, stained fabric of Clara’s faded flower-girl dress. The polite, hushed murmurs of the wealthy American guests instantly transformed into shocked, tense whispers as Victoria Ashford marched down the aisle, her high heels clicking aggressively against the marble.

"I said, who let this child in here?" Victoria demanded, her voice shrill and echoing off the high ceilings. She stopped directly in front of the four-year-old girl, looming over her with an expression of pure, unfiltered disgust.

Clara shrank back, her fair, rosy skin paling as she looked up at the towering, angry bride. The little girl’s arms trembled under the weight of baby Mia, but she refused to drop her eight-month-old sister.

"I... I need to find him," Clara whispered, her tiny American accent shaking violently. "My mommy told me to come here. I have to find Adrian."

The moment the child spoke the groom's name, the air in the ballroom seemed to turn to solid ice. Richard Ashford stepped forward, his eyes narrowing into dangerous, calculating slits.

"What did you just say?" Victoria breathed, the color draining from her lips. The implication of a child searching for her groom sent a wave of paranoid, vicious fury through her veins. "You do not speak his name. You are a filthy little liar. Security! Throw them out!"

Before the bodyguards could even cross the room, Victoria’s temper completely overrode her elegant facade. She reached out with her manicured, diamond-clad hands and violently yanked the edge of baby Mia’s white blanket.

"Give me that!" Victoria shrieked, intending to pull the infant away and force the children out the door.

"No! Leave her alone!" Clara screamed, her protective instincts taking over.

Clara refused to let go. She pulled the blanket back with all her tiny strength. The sudden, violent tug-of-war caused Clara to lose her balance. The four-year-old fell hard onto one knee on the polished marble floor. Despite the pain shooting through her leg, Clara twisted her body, keeping the infant completely and safely shielded against her chest, absorbing the impact herself.

As Clara fell, the small, faded photograph she had been hiding inside her dress pocket slipped out. It fluttered onto the immaculate white floorline.

Victoria’s sharp eyes caught the movement. With a swift, aggressive motion, she reached down and snatched the faded photograph directly from Clara’s hand before the little girl could retrieve it.

"Please! That's my mommy!" Clara cried, reaching up from the floor with desperate, trembling fingers. "Give it back!"

Victoria looked at the photograph. The image clearly registered in her mind, and her fair face twisted into a mask of pure, homicidal rage. Without a single fraction of hesitation, she let the photograph fall to the floor. She raised her foot and brought her expensive, bridal heel down hard, brutally crushing the image against the marble.

"Girls like you," Victoria hissed coldly, leaning down so her venomous words were perfectly clear to the weeping child, "don’t walk into my wedding and claim my husband."

"Please..." Clara sobbed, tears spilling over her rosy cheeks as she clutched her baby sister. "Mommy said he would help us."

"Your mommy," Victoria sneered, stepping her heel harder into the photograph, "is a liar. And you are nothing but trash."
