Chapter 6

The sheer, chilling certainty in Damon’s voice paralyzed Brielle. She stared at him, her chest heaving, the reality of her catastrophic miscalculation finally setting in. She had treated the children of a Mafia boss like disposable toys, relying on her family's political leverage to shield her from the consequences. She now realized that Damon Roswell valued his bloodline far above any political alliance.
"Take the boys inside," Damon commanded, not taking his eyes off the woman trembling on the loveseat. "Have Maria draw them a bath and get them whatever they want to eat. I will be in to see them shortly."
"Yes, Mr. Roswell," the lead bodyguard replied in a crisp American accent.
The two professional men gently ushered Caleb and Micah out of the pavilion, their tailored suits moving with swift efficiency. The children disappeared across the bright, sunlit lawn, leaving Damon entirely alone with his former fiancée.
"Damon, please, let’s be rational about this," Brielle pleaded, her voice dropping into a pathetic, wheedling tone as she slowly pushed herself up from the wicker cushions. "We can fix this. I'll apologize to the boys. I'll buy them whatever they want. We have a wedding in three weeks, Damon. The press, the families... it will be a scandal."
"There will be no wedding," Damon said, his voice flat and uncompromising. "And there will be no scandal, because you are going to quietly pack your belongings and leave this estate tonight."
"You can't do this to me!" Brielle screamed, her fair skin flushing an ugly, mottled red. Her fear rapidly morphed back into entitled fury. "I gave you two years of my life! I tolerated your dangerous lifestyle! I smiled for your violent friends! I demand compensation!"
"Compensation?" Damon laughed, a low, dark sound completely devoid of humor. He slowly approached the low gift table, stepping over the spilled cups of juice. "You think this is a corporate merger, Brielle? You think you can negotiate a severance package after torturing my children?"
"My father is a federal judge, Damon!" Brielle shrieked, playing her final, desperate card. "If you throw me out like a piece of trash, he will sign every wiretap and search warrant the FBI puts on his desk. He will dismantle your entire organization!"
Damon stopped. The bright, cinematic lighting caught the heavy family signet ring on his hand as he reached out and picked up the fabric sash from the padded post. He turned it over in his hands, feeling the thick, unyielding material.
"You think your father's gavel scares me?" Damon asked quietly, his eyes lifting to meet hers. "Your father takes my money to fund his reelection campaigns. He spends his weekends on my yachts. If he signs a single warrant against my family, I will ensure the media receives the ledgers detailing every bribe he has ever accepted."

Brielle’s mouth fell open. The political armor she thought she wore had just been entirely stripped away.
"You have no leverage, Brielle," Damon stated, tossing the fabric sash onto her lap. "You are completely, utterly powerless."
