Chapter 4

The sheer, unapologetic audacity of Brielle’s words hung in the bright, cinematic air like a death sentence. To invoke death in the presence of a man who commanded an empire built on it was an act of profound, suicidal stupidity. Damon Roswell did not shout. He did not lose his temper. The veteran Mafia boss simply allowed the cold, calculating monster within him to rise to the surface.

Damon turned fully toward her, his posture rigid and unyielding. The tailored lines of his suit emphasized his deeply masculine, powerful frame.

Brielle, sensing the sudden, dangerous shift in his demeanor, attempted to reassert her control. In a highly irrational move, she stepped forward and reached past Damon, her manicured hand extending toward the pavilion entrance where the bodyguards were holding Caleb.

"Caleb, come here and tell your father that we were just playing," Brielle commanded, her voice shrill.

She didn't make it past him. Damon instantly shifted his weight, his broad chest completely blocking her path. It was a wall of solid muscle and tailored wool.

Furious at being physically denied, Brielle’s temper flared. "Move out of my way, Damon!" she shrieked.

Without thinking, she raised her hand and violently slapped Damon across the face.

The sound of the impact cracked sharply in the quiet pavilion. Damon’s head turned slightly with the force of the blow. The two bodyguards at the entrance instinctively reached inside their professional suits, their hands gripping the handles of their concealed firearms, waiting for the order to execute.

Damon did not raise his hand to his cheek. He did not flinch. Very slowly, he turned his head back to look at her. The handsome, composed features of his fair face were completely devoid of any emotion. His eyes were dead, reflecting the bright light like shards of broken glass.

The arrogant, dismissive smile on Brielle’s face vanished instantly. The reality of what she had just done crashed down upon her. The rosy color drained entirely from her skin, leaving her looking sickly and pale.

There was no dialogue. The heavy, suffocating silence of the pavilion communicated far more than words ever could.

Panic seized Brielle’s mind. Driven by pure, unadulterated fear, she foolishly raised her hand again, intending to strike him a second time to create distance.

Damon’s reaction was blindingly fast. He caught her wrist mid-air, his grip like a steel vice. With terrifying, fluid precision, he delivered one explosive, open-handed counterstrike directly across her cheek.

The sheer force of the blow lifted Brielle off her high heels. She stumbled violently sideways, completely losing her balance. She crashed heavily onto the wicker loveseat pushed against the pavilion wall. As she fell, her elbow caught the sharp edge of the low gift table. Paper cups tipped over chaotically, spilling bright red fruit juice across the pristine green grass like fresh blood.

Damon did not pursue her. He simply stood exactly where he was, remaining an impenetrable barrier between the woman on the loveseat and his children at the door.
