Chapter 5

The aftermath of the violent impact left the pavilion in a state of suspended animation. The bright, natural colors of the setting—the white fabric of the tent, the green of the lawn, the red juice soaking into the earth—provided a stark, vivid backdrop to Brielle's total humiliation. She lay draped across the wicker loveseat, clutching her rapidly swelling cheek, her breathing coming in sharp, ragged gasps.
Behind Damon, the two adult bodyguards maintained their vigilant watch. Six-year-old Micah, trembling but trying to be brave, reached out and held three-year-old Caleb’s hand tightly. The boys watched their father with a mixture of profound awe and fear, completely insulated from the physical violence by his towering presence.
Brielle weakly gripped the arm of the wicker loveseat, struggling to pull herself upright. Her elegant party dress was twisted, and her expensive earrings dangled precariously. She looked up at Damon, genuine terror finally replacing the arrogant superiority that had defined her entire existence.
"Damon..." she whimpered, her American accent cracking. "You... you hit me."
"You assaulted my blood," Damon replied. His voice was quiet, incredibly controlled, and utterly lethal. He didn't raise his volume, but the sheer gravity of his words vibrated in the air.
He slowly looked down at the grass, his eyes resting on the discarded fabric blindfold that had been used to torture his youngest son. He stared at it for a long, heavy moment before bringing his cold, calculating gaze back to Brielle’s terrified face.
"You thought you could walk into my home," Damon said, his deep voice slicing through the quiet afternoon, "and establish your dominance by terrorizing my children."
"I was just trying to be a mother to them!" Brielle shrieked, desperately grasping for an excuse. "They need discipline, Damon! You are never here! You are always dealing with the family business! Someone has to teach them how to be strong!"
"Do not ever use the word 'mother' in my presence again," Damon commanded, taking one slow, deliberate step toward the loveseat. "A mother protects. You are a parasite. You sought to break them so you could control me."
"My family will hear about this!" Brielle threatened, though her voice shook violently. "The Sutton family will not stand for this kind of disrespect! You need our political connections, Damon! If you ruin this engagement, you ruin the alliance!"
Damon stopped. The mention of the Sutton family’s political power would have given any other man pause. But Damon Roswell was not any other man.
"The alliance," Damon murmured, his fair face hardening into a mask of pure, unadulterated menace. "Is officially terminated."

He looked directly into Brielle’s panicked eyes. The bright sunlight offered no sanctuary.
"The next person tied to that post," Damon stated, his voice quiet, dangerous, and completely absolute, "will be you."
