Chapter 9

The Hale family chat was uglier than I expected.

Linda had created it months earlier.

Ryan.

Two uncles.

Three cousins.

No Emily.

One message from Linda:

She’s still too influenced by Salvatore.

Ryan replied:

The baby will change that.

Another:

Once she’s focused on motherhood, she’ll stop trying to manage everything.

Then one cousin asked:

What if she goes back to Moretti after delivery?

Linda answered:

She won’t leave without the child.

I stopped reading.

Emily stared at the screen.

That sentence explained everything.

They knew exactly what held her in place.

Not love for Ryan.

Fear of separation from her baby.

I looked at Linda.

“You never needed locks.”

She said nothing.

“You used motherhood.”

Her face tightened.

“I wanted my grandson raised correctly.”

“By removing his mother?”

“I never said remove.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“You said rest.”

Silence.

“Adjustment.”

Nothing.

“Emotional.”

Her favorite words were all soft enough to hide the same result.

I looked at Emily.

“They were counting on you staying because leaving felt more dangerous than enduring them.”

She nodded.

That was the architecture.

Not a prison with bars.

A prison built from motherhood, guilt, reputation, and the constant suggestion that everyone else would believe the Hales first.
