Chapter 17

One year later, Emily held Luca’s first birthday in my garden.

Small.

Family only.

People she chose.

Ryan attended.

Not beside her.

Across the table.

Their relationship had become something cautious and unfinished. He had spent the year trying to change without demanding she reward him for it.

That was all I knew.

All I needed to know.

Linda was not there.

Emily had not invited her.

No one argued.

Near sunset, Emily draped a light shawl over her shoulders because the air turned cool.

For one second, I remembered the baby shower.

The fabric being torn away.

The bruises underneath.

Emily noticed my face.

“This one stays on because I want it.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

Luca reached up and grabbed the edge.

Emily laughed.

Then Sienna—my niece’s little girl—no, there was no Sienna here. Just Emily, Luca, and the family she was rebuilding.

I corrected the thought inside my own head and looked again.

Emily was not the frightened woman asking permission to go home.

She was the woman deciding what home meant.

Ryan approached carefully.

“Can I hold him?”

Emily looked at him.

Then at Luca.

“Yes.”

Choice.

That was the word everything came back to.

Not Hale.

Not Moretti.

Not heir.

Not tradition.

Choice.

A year earlier, Linda covered bruises because she believed appearances mattered more than truth.

Ryan hurt Emily because he believed control would make him feel powerful.

I believed strength meant arriving in time to stop them.

I was wrong.

The harder strength was what came after.

Listening when Emily said no.

Waiting when she did not know.

Letting my grandson be a child instead of a symbol.

And building a family where no pregnant daughter ever had to hide bruises under a shawl because she was more afraid of the consequences of being seen than of the person hurting her.
