Chapter 1

Tiered crystal chandeliers flooded the entire interior of the Rowe mansion with a warm, golden light, chasing away the bitter November chill that pressed against the tall windows. It was a crowded Thanksgiving reception, a flawless display of power and wealth designed to mask the lethal reality of the men who occupied the room. Tall ivory candles glowed softly inside thick glass hurricane holders, arranged meticulously along polished walnut consoles. Gilded mirrors reflected the amber illumination across pristine marble floors, highlighting the carved walnut furniture and rich burgundy velvet sofas. Copper bowls overflowing with miniature pumpkins, vibrant autumn foliage, and elegant cornucopia arrangements decorated the grand salon, filling the air with the scent of cinnamon and roasted meats.
At the center of the room stood Dante Rowe. At thirty-three, the mafia boss was an imposing, strikingly handsome figure. He possessed broad shoulders that effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit, and an angular jaw shadowed by extremely short, neat stubble. His naturally swept-back dark hair caught the golden light as he surveyed his domain. Artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers, utilizing visible negative space that drew the eye, while a small, intricate neck tattoo appeared just above his crisp white collar. He checked his luxury wristwatch, the heavy family signet ring on his hand gleaming.
"The eastern ports are entirely locked down for the holiday, Dante," muttered Vincent, his most trusted capo, stepping close to be heard over the elegant string quartet playing in the corner.
"Are you certain of that, Vincent?" Dante asked, his deep, controlled voice carrying a crisp American accent. "The holidays make our rivals desperate. Desperate men make unforgivable mistakes."
"My men are stationed at every dock, Boss," Vincent assured him, taking a slow sip from a crystal glass. "Everything is running exactly to your specifications."
"Keep the perimeter guards doubled until sunrise," Dante commanded, his dark eyes sweeping over the formally dressed guests gathering around the massive family dining table. "I want absolutely no surprises in my home tonight."
"Of course," Vincent nodded. "And how is the bride-to-be handling the pressures of hosting the syndicate?"
Dante’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He looked across the room at Isadora Reed, his fiancée. She was twenty-nine, draped in a stunning champagne satin gown that contrasted beautifully with her fair, rosy skin. Heavy diamond earrings sparkled as she laughed at a guest’s joke, maintaining an elegant public smile that barely concealed a quietly contemptuous manner.
"Isadora understands the expectations of this family," Dante replied, his tone entirely devoid of warmth. "She knows her role."
"She plays the part well," Vincent noted, swirling his drink. "But where is your father? Walter never misses a holiday dinner."
Dante frowned, his gaze finding the open place setting at the head of the table. "Isadora informed me that he was feeling too weak to leave his rooms today. His health has been fragile."

"I see," Vincent said smoothly, though a flicker of doubt crossed his eyes. "It is a shame. The men look to him for tradition."
"I will check on him after the main course," Dante said, adjusting his cuffs. "Let her enjoy the spotlight for now. I control the board, Vincent. Nobody makes a move in this house without my permission."
