Chapter 3

Linda called the bruises “marriage marks.”
That phrase nearly made me lose control.
Emily told me she first heard it after Ryan bruised her wrist badly enough that she could not wear her usual bracelet.
Linda brought a wider cuff.
“She said women in strong families learn what to show.”
I stared.
“And what to hide?”
Emily nodded.
My mother had died when Emily was twelve.
If she had lived to hear that sentence, Linda Hale would never have made it through dinner.
I leaned back.
“What else did Linda control?”
Emily hesitated.
“Food.”
My expression changed.
“Explain.”
“She said I was gaining too quickly.”
“According to your doctor?”
“No.”
“According to who?”
“Her.”
Of course.
Ryan supported it because Linda framed every restriction as protecting the baby.
Smaller desserts.
Missed lunches after arguments.
No snacks after dinner.
Nothing severe enough to look obvious.
Everything severe enough to make Emily feel watched.
Then:
“She took my phone sometimes.”
I went still.
“Why?”
“If I called you after Ryan and I fought.”
My jaw tightened.
“What did she say?”
“That you had already told Ryan you didn’t want to hear every little complaint.”
I closed my eyes.
I had never said that.
Not once.
“How many times did you try to call me?”
Emily looked away.
“More than I can count.”
That hurt.
I remembered evenings when her name flashed on my phone and disappeared before I answered.
I assumed bad signal.
Changed mind.
Pregnancy fatigue.
May you like
Now I understood.
Someone had been cutting the connection before I even knew it existed.
