Chapter 14

Emily chose separation before the baby was born.

Not divorce.

Not forever.

Distance.

That distinction mattered to her.

Ryan hated it.

He wanted a final answer.

People who control others often hate temporary boundaries most because uncertainty prevents them from regaining the script.

Emily refused.

“I don’t know what happens next.”

That was enough.

She moved into my home.

Not back into her childhood bedroom.

I offered her the east suite.

Her own space.

Her own keys.

Her own decisions.

The first week, she asked permission to invite a friend.

That hurt.

“You don’t need permission.”

She stared.

“I know.”

But she had still asked.

Habits remain after rules disappear.

Weeks passed.

She stopped asking.

Good.

May you like

The bruises faded.

Her voice took longer.
