Chapter 4

Ryan insisted he had never isolated Emily.

Then my security chief brought me her phone records.

Not her current phone.

An older one.

Emily had hidden it inside a sewing basket after Linda started taking the main device.

There were drafts.

Dozens.

Dad, can I come home tonight?

Dad, please don’t call Ryan first.

Dad, I think Linda listens outside the bedroom.

Dad, I’m scared to tell you because they say you already know.

None sent.

Some stopped halfway.

One ended with:

If I disappear after the baby comes, don’t believe I left him.

I stared at that line until the room blurred.

“What does that mean?”

Emily wrapped my jacket tighter around herself.

Ryan had started telling her what would happen after delivery.

She would “rest.”

The baby would spend the first weeks at the Hale house.

Linda would supervise.

Emily would recover elsewhere.

“Elsewhere where?”

Emily shook her head.

“They wouldn’t tell me.”

My breathing slowed.

Not because I was calm.

Because rage had become too precise for movement.

“They planned to separate you from your baby.”

“They said temporarily.”

“Did you believe them?”

Her silence answered.

Then Emily looked at me.

“There’s a nursery.”

“Where?”

“At Linda’s house.”

“So?”

Her face changed.

“It doesn’t have anything of mine in it.”

No photographs.

No nursing chair Emily chose.

No clothing for her.

No place for a mother to stay.

Just a baby room.

May you like

Prepared months before birth.

A nursery built as though Emily’s role ended once she delivered my grandson.
