Chapter 11

I removed Ryan from every Moretti channel that came through Emily.
Not his money.
Not his personal relationships.
Not his name.
Just borrowed access.
He took it badly.
“You’re destroying my standing.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I’m measuring it without my daughter underneath it.”
His face changed.
Important distinction.
Every invitation that vanished had never belonged solely to Ryan.
They came because he married Emily.
Every old capo who stopped answering had never been his man.
He had confused access with ownership.
Linda called it humiliation.
I called it clarity.
Then I asked Emily what she wanted.
She took a long time.
“I want to stay with you.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
“Fine.”
“I don’t want Ryan near me.”
“Fine.”
“I don’t want Linda at the birth.”
“Fine.”
Then she touched her stomach.
“And I don’t want anyone calling my son an heir.”
I almost smiled.
“Good.”
She looked surprised.
“He can be a baby first.”
That sentence changed the entire room.
No Hale heir.
No Moretti continuation.
No symbol.
May you like
A baby.
That was enough.
