Chapter 8

Emily’s wedding ring hid another clue.

Not inside it.

Under it.

A dark mark circled her finger.

I noticed when she took the ring off later.

“What happened?”

She stared.

“Ryan squeezes my hand when he wants me quiet.”

My chest tightened.

“How long?”

“Months.”

Small cruelty.

Invisible in public.

Perfect for a man obsessed with appearances.

Then Emily told me about family dinners.

If she contradicted him, he took her hand beneath the table.

Tighter until she stopped.

Linda saw.

Never intervened.

Once, Linda smiled.

“That was when I realized she wanted me trained.”

The word hurt.

Trained.

Not loved.

Not welcomed.

Made manageable.

Emily looked at me.

“You know what the worst part was?”

I waited.

“I started preparing before dinner.”

“How?”

“I would think through every sentence so I wouldn’t embarrass him.”

Her eyes filled.

“I stopped talking.”

That was worse than every bruise.

My daughter had always been loud.

Opinionated.

The kind of child who corrected adults without first deciding whether they were important.

Ryan had not only marked her arms.

He had taught her to edit herself before entering rooms.

I looked at her.

“You don’t have to do that here.”

She smiled sadly.

“I know.”

Then:

May you like

“I don’t remember how not to.”

That became the real work ahead.
