Chapter 5

I went to the Hale house that night.
Emily stayed with my people.
Ryan came because I made him.
Linda came because she refused to let him face me alone.
The nursery was exactly as Emily described.
Beautiful.
Expensive.
Wrong.
Blue walls.
Crib.
Monogrammed blankets.
A silver rattle engraved:
HALE HEIR.
I picked it up.
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Put that down.”
I looked at him.
“You put heir on a six-inch toy.”
“My son is a Hale.”
“He is also Emily’s child.”
Silence.
Linda stepped forward.
“The baby needs stability.”
I almost smiled.
“You keep using that word.”
“What word?”
“Need.”
I looked around the room.
“Everything you want becomes something the baby needs.”
Her face hardened.
I opened the wardrobe.
Infant clothing.
No maternity clothes.
No space for Emily.
Then I found the bassinet card.
A handwritten list.
Feeding.
Sleeping.
Visitor restrictions.
Under MOTHER:
LIMIT CONTACT FIRST WEEK IF EMOTIONAL.
I stared at Linda.
“What is this?”
She did not answer.
Ryan did.
“Mom thought Emily might struggle.”
“With what?”
“Adjustment.”
I turned slowly.
“To her own child?”
Silence.
That was when I understood.
They had not simply planned for Emily’s recovery.
They were preparing a story where her attachment became instability.
Any objection could be called emotional.
Any fear could be blamed on hormones.
Any attempt to take the baby back could be treated as proof she needed more rest.
Not a legal strategy.
A family one.
Control the room.
May you like
Control the language.
Control what everyone believes happened.
