Chapter 7

Ryan finally stopped pretending.

“You have no idea what it’s like.”

I almost laughed.

“What?”

“To walk into every room and hear your name before mine.”

I stared.

“My daughter’s name?”

“Yours.”

There it was.

He did not resent being Emily’s husband.

He resented being my son-in-law.

Every compliment sounded borrowed.

Every invitation felt conditional.

Every Hale relative asked when he would build something of his own.

Then Emily became pregnant with a boy.

Suddenly Ryan imagined an answer.

A son.

A branch.

A future not introduced through me.

I could understand the insecurity.

I could not forgive what he did with it.

“So you hurt her.”

His jaw tightened.

“I lost control.”

“Repeatedly.”

Silence.

“Then your mother covered it.”

Linda snapped:

“I protected my family.”

Emily flinched.

I turned.

“No.”

Linda looked at me.

“You protected your son from consequence.”

Her face hardened.

“There is no family if every private mistake gets dragged into public.”

Again.

Mistake.

Singular.

As if repetition disappeared when described politely.

I leaned closer.

“You taught Emily to cover bruises so Ryan could keep imagining he was powerful.”

Linda stared.

“That’s not what happened.”

“No?”

I looked toward the nursery.

May you like

“You built a room for her baby and no place for her.”

For the first time, Linda had nothing ready.
