Chapter 8

The fragile, terrifying whisper of a four-year-old girl echoed like a death knell in the bright, sun-soaked living room.

For a span of three heartbeats, Daniel’s face went completely blank. The handsome, masculine features slackened into an expression of sheer, unadulterated shock. The realization of the betrayal hit him with the force of a freight train. This was not a moment of lost temper. This was not a tragic accident. This was a coordinated, malicious assault on his daughter, orchestrated and executed by his own father and sister, while his mother stood by to cover it up.

The shock lasted only a fraction of a second before it shifted.

Before the horrified eyes of the guests, Daniel’s expression morphed into something unrecognizable. The stunned father vanished completely, replaced by a visage of absolute, apocalyptic fury. His dark eyes darkened further, turning into bottomless voids of pure malice. The imposing, mafia-boss aura that he had carried into the room expanded, suffocating the air, turning the bright, vivid colors of the afternoon into the backdrop of a slaughterhouse.

He looked at Robert, who was still trembling near the wall, his fair skin slick with sweat. He looked at Rebecca, whose arrogant sneer had finally melted into genuine, wide-eyed panic. He looked at Linda, who was holding her slapped cheek, sobbing quietly on the floor.

The guests, watching the transformation of Daniel’s face, simultaneously realized that they were trapped in a confined space with a man who was no longer bound by the laws of society or family. The polite, wealthy facade of the American suburbs had evaporated.

Daniel’s grip on Lily tightened just enough to reassure her, his massive hand gently pressing her head back down into the crook of his neck, shielding her eyes from the monsters standing in front of them. He didn't scream. He didn't rant. The absolute fury coursing through his veins was far too cold for theatrics.

He slowly turned his head, his gaze sweeping over the crowd of paralyzed friends and distant relatives. His voice, when he finally spoke, was a low, guttural rasp that commanded total obedience.

"Get out."

The two words were delivered without a shred of volume, yet they hit the crowd like a physical blow. The wealthy, fair-skinned guests didn't need to be told twice. A chaotic, desperate scramble ensued. Women in high heels slipped on the hardwood, men pushed past each other to reach the front door. Within thirty seconds, the grand living room was entirely emptied of outsiders, the front door slamming shut, leaving Daniel alone with the three people who had just forfeited their lives.
