Chapter 19

Six months later, Daniel Reed had completely consolidated his power. Reed Enterprises was operating with flawless, ruthless efficiency under his absolute control. The corporate world feared him, whispering rumors of the sudden, inexplicable disappearance of his father and the hostile takeover that followed. Nobody dared to cross him.
The fortified compound had become a true home. Lily thrived in the secure, loving environment, completely isolated from the toxic, abusive reality of her former extended family. The bruises had faded long ago, leaving behind a happy, energetic four-year-old girl who adored her father.
Daniel sat in his home office, reviewing a stack of international shipping contracts. He wore a crisp, white dress shirt, his heavy silver wristwatch catching the light from the desk lamp. He was the picture of an untouchable, billionaire titan.
Marcus knocked twice on the heavy oak door before entering. His face was grim, carrying a sealed, encrypted tablet.
"Sir. We have a situation regarding the desert relocation facility," Marcus reported, his voice low and urgent.
Daniel’s head snapped up, the protective fury instantly reigniting in his chest. "What happened?"
"The perimeter guards apprehended an intruder attempting to breach the compound," Marcus explained, handing the tablet over. "He was heavily armed and carrying detailed schematics of the facility's security grid. He wasn't a local thief, Mr. Reed. He was a professional mercenary."
Daniel’s jaw locked tight. He reviewed the interrogation footage on the tablet. The mercenary was bleeding and bruised, but he was laughing, a cruel, arrogant sound.

"Who hired you?" Marcus’s voice demanded off-camera in the footage.
"You think Robert Reed didn't have friends?" the mercenary spat, blood flecking his lips. "You think you can just vanish a CEO and nobody asks questions? The East Coast syndicate bought Robert's debt years ago. They want their money, Daniel. And they know you're holding him hostage."
