Chapter 10

The silence in the living room stretched into an agonizing eternity. The bright, vivid colors of the afternoon seemed to mock the dark, suffocating dread that had settled over the Reed family. Linda remained on the floor, clutching her stinging cheek; Robert was paralyzed against the wall; and Rebecca was trapped by the fireplace. They watched Daniel with wide, terrified eyes, waiting for the explosion that they knew they deserved.

But the explosion never came.

Daniel simply sat in the mahogany armchair, his large hand gently stroking Lily’s back until her breathing finally leveled out, her exhausted, terrified sobs fading into a quiet, rhythmic sleep against his chest. The imposing, mafia-boss presence he exuded had entirely consumed the room. He was no longer a son, and he was no longer a brother. He was the judge, the jury, and the inevitable consequence.

Slowly, deliberately, Daniel stood up. He adjusted Lily in his arms, ensuring she was completely shielded from the three figures standing in the wreckage. He looked at them one last time, his handsome face carved from unforgiving stone.

"You thought you could touch what is mine," Daniel said, his crisp American accent barely above a whisper, yet resonating with devastating finality. "You thought because we share blood, you were safe from the rules."

Robert opened his mouth to speak, but the sheer, freezing terror in Daniel's eyes silenced him instantly.

"Blood doesn't protect you," Daniel continued, taking a slow step toward the hallway. "Blood is just a liability. And as of this moment, you are all liabilities."

Rebecca let out a muffled sob, sinking to her knees on the expensive Persian rug.

"I'm leaving this house," Daniel stated, his voice completely devoid of any familial warmth. "I am walking out that door with my daughter. You will not follow us. You will not call me. You will sit in this bright, beautiful room, and you will wait."

He paused at the threshold of the living room, the afternoon sun casting a long, dark silhouette behind him.

"Because what happens next," Daniel promised, his voice dripping with an icy, terrifying certainty that promised absolute ruin, "will make you wish I had killed you today."

Without another word, Daniel turned his back on his family and walked down the hallway, the front door clicking shut with a quiet, final thud. Inside the immaculate, sun-drenched living room, the three Reeds were left alone amidst the shattered glass and spilled beer, realizing with horrifying clarity that the true nightmare hadn't ended—it had only just begun.
