Chapter 7

The bright, natural sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows seemed to freeze as Daniel held his mother’s wrist. There was no hesitation, no internal conflict visible on his movie-star handsome face. The man standing in the nursery was no longer a son; he was a father defending his slaughtered wife and his newborn child.
"You ceased to be my mother today," Daniel said, his voice absolute and devoid of any human warmth.
With a sudden, powerful pivot of his shoulder, Daniel released her wrist and brought his right hand across in a devastating arc. He delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap directly across Evelyn’s face.
The sound cracked through the room like a bullwhip.
The immense, deeply masculine power behind the strike was catastrophic for the older woman. The impact struck her fair, rosy cheek with unforgiving brutality. Evelyn’s eyes went wide with shock as the kinetic force lifted her off her expensive heels.
She spun violently backward, completely out of control, her elegant dark-red blouse twisting around her frame. She hurtled backward across the plush carpet, crashing directly into the towering, intricately organized nursery-supply display unit against the far wall.
The massive wooden structure buckled instantly upon impact.
A chaotic explosion of brightly colored nursery items rained down in the cinematic light. Dozens of empty, brightly colored diaper boxes burst outward, bouncing across the floor. A massive collection of high-end plush toys—bears, giraffes, and elephants—rained down across the white carpet in a surreal, soft avalanche. Neatly folded pastel towels collapsed from the upper shelves, burying the lower half of the display. Heavy, decorative storage bins tumbled down, striking the floor with dull, heavy thuds.
Evelyn dropped heavily beneath the tilted, groaning frame of the display, buried under a mountain of plush toys and cardboard boxes. She collapsed onto her side, gasping for air, her hand clutching her rapidly swelling, bright red cheek. The aristocratic, untouchable matriarch had been reduced to a groveling, terrified heap in the ruins of the nursery.

Daniel stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving slowly. He adjusted his dark three-piece suit, ensuring Noah was still perfectly safe and undisturbed against his chest. He looked down at the devastation he had just unleashed—his cousin unconscious in the linen, his mother bleeding in the toys, and his wife still fighting for her life on the floor.
He didn't say a word. The sheer violence of the moment required no dialogue. The absolute, unyielding dominance of the Mafia boss had been violently reestablished. The only sound in the room was the heavy, ragged breathing of the housekeeper, Marissa, who had dropped to her knees beside Clara, desperately checking the young mother’s pulse in the bright, unforgiving light of the estate.
