Chapter 11

The private medical suite in the east wing of the Carter estate was bathed in the same bright, flawless light as the rest of the mansion. The pristine white walls and gleaming stainless steel equipment felt a world away from the horrors of the cellar. Clara lay in the center of the room, an IV line securely taped to her pale arm, delivering a steady drip of hydration and pain medication. Her fair, rosy complexion was slowly returning, though she remained deeply asleep, her body finally allowed to rest.

Daniel stood by the large window, looking out over the expansive, meticulously manicured grounds of the estate. He had changed out of his dark three-piece suit, now wearing a simple, dark-grey dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing the strong, tanned forearms of a man who built his empire with his own hands. Noah was sleeping peacefully in a state-of-the-art bassinet beside Clara's bed, the nightmare of the nursery completely erased from the newborn's mind.

The heavy door to the medical suite opened softly. Dr. Evans, a highly paid, utterly discreet physician employed exclusively by the Carter family, stepped into the room holding a tablet.

"Mr. Carter," Dr. Evans said, his crisp American accent hushed. "Her vitals are stabilizing. The physical trauma from the... exertion... is severe, and the risk of infection was dangerously high. But we intervened in time. She will need extensive rest and physical therapy, but she will recover completely."

Daniel didn't turn away from the window. "And the psychological trauma?"

Dr. Evans hesitated, his professional demeanor faltering for a fraction of a second. "That is harder to quantify, sir. Being subjected to freezing temperatures, physical exhaustion, and profound psychological manipulation so soon after major surgery... it will take time. She needs to feel absolutely safe."

"She is safe," Daniel stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of absolute certainty. He finally turned to face the doctor, his handsome, movie-star features set in cold stone. "Thank you, Doctor. Ensure there is a nurse in this room twenty-four hours a day."

"Of course, Mr. Carter," Dr. Evans nodded, slipping quietly out of the room.

Daniel walked over to the bed and gently took Clara's hand. He sat in the plush chair beside her, his thumb tracing the faint blue veins on her wrist. He had secured her survival. Now, he had to secure her future by eliminating the poison that had infected his home.
