Chapter 13

The next morning, the Carter estate functioned with a chilling, ruthless efficiency. The staff moved quietly, keeping their eyes averted from the heavy oak doors of the nursery wing. Marissa, the brave housekeeper who had exposed the horrific abuse, had been promoted to Head of Household, effectively placing her in charge of the entire staff. She moved through the bright, sunlit corridors with renewed purpose, fiercely protective of the new regime.
Daniel sat in his private study, the heavy mahogany desk covered in encrypted tablets and shipping manifests. He was systematically dismantling the financial networks Evelyn and Victor had managed within the family's legitimate businesses. He was stripping them of their assets, ensuring that even if they miraculously escaped the holding cells, they would be utterly destitute.
His encrypted satellite phone buzzed. Daniel picked it up, noting the secure routing number of his lead capo in the city.
"Report," Daniel commanded, his crisp American accent sharp.
"Boss," the capo’s voice was tense. "We have a situation. Word has leaked about Victor's sudden disappearance. The Moretti family is moving into the vacuum on the East Side docks. They think we are fractured because of internal conflict."
Daniel’s jaw locked tight. The timing was disastrous. He was fighting a war inside his own home, and now a rival syndicate was testing his borders.
"They think I am distracted," Daniel mused, a cold, calculating darkness settling over his handsome features. "They think because my wife was injured, I will not respond with overwhelming force."
"What are your orders, Mr. Carter?" the capo asked.
"Mobilize the strike teams," Daniel said, his voice dropping into the terrifying register of a ruthless predator. "I want the Moretti warehouses burned to the ground. I want their shipments seized. I want absolute, disproportionate retaliation. Show them exactly what happens when they test my borders."

"Consider it done, Boss."
Daniel hung up the phone. He stood up and walked to the window, looking out over the manicured lawns. He had to be ruthless. He had to show the entire city that the Carter family was a fortress, impenetrable and deadly. He would not allow the weakness of his mother and cousin to cost him the empire he had built to protect his wife and son.
