Chapter 3

The words dropped into the bright, cinematic air of the terrace like a live grenade. The horrific, deeply insulting nature of the lie caused the temperature in the immediate vicinity to plummet to absolute zero. To call the sole blood heir of the Moretti syndicate a servant was an act of profound, suicidal treason.

Mason Reed, realizing with a sudden, sickening jolt of preadolescent terror that the game had catastrophically changed, reacted instinctively. The eleven-year-old boy quickly pulled his feet away, taking two rapid, stumbling steps backward. His fair, rosy skin drained of all color as he looked up at the towering, deeply intimidating figure of the Mafia Boss. Mason pressed his back against a stone pillar, desperately trying to make himself invisible.

Vanessa’s expression instantly changed.

The cruel, sadistic smile that had adorned her face just seconds ago vanished entirely. It was replaced by a sudden, jarring mask of wide-eyed panic. She looked at her husband’s broad back, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She had severely miscalculated. She had believed that Raffaele’s preoccupation with the syndicate’s business would provide her with the perfect cover to subjugate his child and elevate her own son within the household hierarchy.

"Raffaele, darling, wait," Vanessa stammered, her voice breathless and high-pitched. Her American accent trembled uncontrollably. She took a hesitant step forward, reaching her manicured hand out toward his arm. "It is a misunderstanding. She was playing in the dirt. I was merely trying to teach her some discipline. She needs structure."

Raffaele remained completely, terrifyingly still. He held Lily securely against his chest, his large hand gently stroking the back of the little girl’s head to soothe her frantic sobbing.

"You believe," Raffaele murmured, not even turning his head to look at his wife. His deep, raspy voice was barely a whisper, yet it vibrated with a suppressed, apocalyptic rage. "That my daughter... requires discipline... from you."

"I am her mother now, Raffaele!" Vanessa argued, her panic causing her to foolishly double down on her authority. Her diamond bracelets clinked loudly as she gestured wildly. "She cannot run around this estate looking like a filthy beggar in front of our guests! It reflects poorly on our family! I told her to clean up!"

"You forced her... onto her knees," Raffaele stated, the slow, controlled pauses in his speech stretching the tension to its absolute breaking point.

"She tripped!" Vanessa lied, her desperation overriding her common sense. "I was helping her up! Ask Mason, he saw the whole thing!"

Mason shook his head violently, pressing himself harder against the stone pillar, absolutely refusing to speak.

Driven by sheer, blind panic and the desperate need to assert her dominance in front of the gathering crowd of bodyguards and capos, Vanessa made the final, fatal mistake of her life.

"Give her to me, Raffaele. I will have the maids wash her," Vanessa demanded, her voice shrill.

She violently reached her hands out, lunging aggressively toward Lily, fully intending to snatch the crying three-year-old right out of her father's protective embrace.
