Chapter 10

The night descended upon the city, but the Moretti estate remained a beacon of bright, cinematic light. The massive floodlights illuminated the manicured gardens, creating a secure, daylight-like perimeter against the darkness outside. Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was a tense, quiet waiting game.

Raffaele sat in the grand, opulent living room. He held a crystal glass of untouched scotch. The heavy silence of the house was punctuated only by the occasional crackle of encrypted radio chatter coming from the security detail stationed in the hallways.

He was a veteran Mafia boss, a man who had orchestrated dozens of wars, but tonight felt different. The stakes were no longer just territory or money; they were the sanctity of his own home.

The heavy mahogany doors of the living room creaked open slowly.

Raffaele turned his head, his cold, intimidating eyes softening instantly.

Lily stood in the doorway. The three-year-old girl was dressed in soft, clean pajamas, her fair, rosy cheeks freshly washed and glowing with innocent health. She clutched a worn, plush teddy bear tightly to her chest. She looked small, fragile, and incredibly brave.

"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her tiny American accent echoing softly in the massive room. "I can't sleep. The house is too quiet."

Raffaele set his glass down immediately. He stood up, his deeply masculine, powerful frame moving with gentle, protective grace. He crossed the room and scooped his daughter up into his arms, holding her securely against his chest.

"It's okay, piccola mia," Raffaele murmured, his raspy voice a warm, comforting rumble against her ear. "Daddy is right here. I am watching over the house tonight."

"Are the bad men coming?" Lily asked, resting her head on his shoulder, her tiny fingers tangling in his dark, tailored suit jacket.

"No one is coming, baby," Raffaele promised, kissing the top of her head. The artistic tattoos on his neck flexed as he looked out the massive windows into the dark night. "Daddy sent his friends to make sure the bad men stay very, very far away."

He carried her over to a large, plush leather armchair near the unlit fireplace and sat down, settling her comfortably onto his lap. He leaned his head back, closing his eyes for a fraction of a second, allowing the steady, peaceful rhythm of her breathing to calm the violent storm still raging inside his mind.

Suddenly, the encrypted radio on the side table crackled loudly.

"Boss," Vincenzo’s voice broke through the static, breathless, accompanied by the distant, sharp staccato of heavy gunfire and wailing sirens.

Raffaele’s eyes snapped open. The cold, lethal executioner instantly returned. He kept one arm securely around his sleeping daughter, while he reached out with his other hand to press the transmission button.

"Report, Vincenzo," Raffaele commanded, his volume terrifyingly low and measured.

"The Reed compound is burning, Boss," Vincenzo shouted over the noise of the battlefield. "The grandfather is dead. The primary targets are neutralized. But... it was a trap. They knew we were coming. The Chicago syndicate had men waiting in the shadows. We are taking heavy fire. They are mobilizing a massive counter-attack directly toward the estate."

Raffaele did not flinch. The charming, romantic look of his face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated war. He looked down at his daughter, sleeping peacefully against his chest, completely unaware that the world was about to end.

"Hold your ground, Vincenzo," Raffaele whispered into the radio, his eyes narrowing into cold, sharp slits. "I will meet them at the gates."

The transmission cut out, leaving Raffaele alone in the bright, elegant room. The true war for the survival of the Moretti empire had just arrived at his doorstep.
