Chapter 2

The sheer audacity of the act occurred in a small, isolated pocket of the vast terrace, momentarily hidden by the towering floral arrangements. Lily knelt on the hard stone, her tiny chest heaving with terrified, breathless sobs. She did not understand the complex, deadly politics of the Mafia syndicate; she only understood that the woman who was supposed to care for her hated her with a burning passion.

"I said, wipe the shoe," Vanessa snapped, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. "Or I will lock you in the cellar before your father even realizes you are gone."

Lily raised her trembling hand, the dirty polishing cloth hovering just inches from Mason’s leather shoe. Mason simply watched, his fair face completely devoid of empathy, entirely willing to let the three-year-old heir to the Moretti empire humiliate herself at his feet.

But across the sprawling brunch terrace, standing amidst a circle of his most ruthless capos, Raffaele Moretti had already sensed the disturbance.

At thirty-three years old, the Mafia Boss was breathtakingly handsome, possessing a deeply masculine, distinctly lethal presence that commanded the entire estate. His thick, dark hair was neatly styled, complementing his angular face, sharply defined jawline, and the short, well-trimmed full beard that framed his mouth. He wore a dark, expensive suit, the crisp dress shirt beneath it unbuttoned at the chest. The open collar revealed glimpses of his fair, rosy skin and the elegant, refined tattoos that crept up his neck and arms, giving him an undeniably dangerous, artistic aura.

Raffaele’s cold, sharp, intimidating eyes swept over the crowd. He wasn't looking at his capos; his predatory instincts had locked onto the sight of his wife leaning aggressively over his daughter.

"Excuse me," Raffaele said.

His voice was deep, slightly raspy, and naturally authoritative. He spoke slowly, with controlled, deliberate pauses between his words. Even when speaking politely, every sentence he uttered sounded measured, cold, and immensely dangerous.

He didn't wait for his men to respond. Raffaele moved with blinding, explosive speed, his polished shoes eating up the distance across the stone terrace. He bypassed the wealthy American guests, moving like a dark storm cloud through the bright, vivid colors of the morning.

Before Lily could touch the cloth to Mason's shoe, a massive, heavily tattooed hand shot out from the periphery.

Raffaele closed the distance and violently grabbed Vanessa by the arm. He didn't just pull her; he tore her away from his daughter with a sudden, devastating display of raw, masculine power. Vanessa let out a shocked shriek, stumbling backward in her high heels, her elegant formal dress twisting awkwardly around her legs.

Raffaele immediately dropped to one knee on the hard stone. He reached out and effortlessly lifted the weeping three-year-old girl to her feet, pulling her flush against his broad chest.

Lily buried her wet, rosy face into his unbuttoned shirt, wrapping her tiny arms desperately around his tattooed neck.

"Daddy…" Lily sobbed, her tiny American accent cracking with pure, unadulterated heartbreak. She clutched the dirty polishing cloth in her fist, her tears soaking into his collar. "Daddy… She said I’m the servant’s child."
