Chapter 1

The sprawling terrace of the Moretti estate was bathed in brilliant, cinematic daylight. It was a flawless summer morning, entirely devoid of any dull or yellow tint, allowing the bright, vivid colors of the extravagant Mafia-family brunch to pop with surreal clarity. Crystal champagne flutes caught the sunlight, throwing fractured rainbows across the pristine white tablecloths. Lush green vines cascaded down the stone pillars, framing the breathtaking coastal view. The guests, an elite gathering of white American adults—capos, politicians, and high-society socialites—mingled with easy confidence. Their fair, rosy skin glowed under the natural light, and the air was filled with the smooth, melodic hum of crisp American accents.

At the center of this opulent gathering, a horrific display of cruelty was quietly unfolding.

Three-year-old Lily Moretti stood near a lavish buffet table, looking entirely out of place in her own home. She wore a delicate, expensive princess dress that should have been pristine, but it was currently filthy, covered in dark streaks of soot and dirt. Her tiny, fair hands trembled as she clutched a dark, grease-stained shoe-polishing cloth. Her rosy cheeks were streaked with silent tears, her bright blue eyes wide with a profound, innocent confusion.

Looming over her was Vanessa Moretti, her thirty-two-year-old stepmother. Vanessa was the picture of aristocratic perfection, wearing an elegant, form-fitting formal dress that swept gracefully against the stone terrace. Heavy diamond earrings sparkled in the sunlight, perfectly matching her sparkling wedding ring and a thick diamond bracelet.

Beside Vanessa stood Mason Reed, her eleven-year-old son from a previous marriage. Mason was dressed in immaculate formal child’s clothing, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. He wore shiny, expensive dress shoes that scuffed slightly against the stone floor. He possessed the same fair, rosy complexion as his mother, and he looked down at the three-year-old girl with an expression of learned, entitled superiority.

"Get down," Vanessa ordered, her American accent sharp and unforgiving.

Lily whimpered, taking a tiny step backward. "But my dress is dirty... I want my Daddy."

"Your father is busy running an empire, you little brat. He doesn't have time for you," Vanessa hissed, her eyes darting around to ensure none of the senior capos were watching.

Without a fraction of hesitation, Vanessa lunged forward. She grabbed Lily roughly by both of her small shoulders. Her manicured fingernails dug into the fragile fabric of the filthy princess dress. With a violent, aggressive downward thrust, Vanessa forcefully shoved the three-year-old girl onto her knees right in front of Mason.

Lily let out a sharp gasp as her knees hit the hard stone terrace.

Vanessa leaned over, snatching the filthy polishing cloth and pressing it brutally into Lily’s tiny, shaking hand. She then reached out and physically pulled Mason by the shoulder, forcing the eleven-year-old boy to step forward, placing his leather dress shoe directly in front of the weeping toddler.

"Wipe it," Vanessa commanded. A cruel, sadistic smile spread across her flawlessly powdered face. The bright sunlight illuminated the sheer malice in her eyes. "Cleaning my son’s shoes is an honor for you."
