Chapter 7

The silence in the garage shattered under the weight of Alessandra's words.
"An execution?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the syllables. Her diamond jewelry clicked against her collarbone as she gripped her own neck in terror. "Ethan… Ethan said the bosses agreed to the transition. He said they took our money!"
"They took your money," Alessandra corrected, her voice echoing with a cold, terrifying authority. "And then they brought that money directly to me. Did you honestly believe Don Salvatore or the Moretti brothers would betray me for a weak, cowardly husband and a second-tier dock enforcer?"
Gavin pushed himself up onto his knees, his hands slipping on the scattered crayon drawings of his son. His fair, rosy skin had turned the color of ash. "No… no, that’s impossible. We paid them three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds. We had guarantees!"
"You had bait," Alessandra said, stepping closer to her kneeling husband. She looked down at him with an expression of profound, absolute disgust. "I have known about your affair for two years, Gavin. I knew about the boy. I knew about the embezzled funds from the southern ports. I let you play your little games because you were useful for keeping the Cole family complacent. But today, you crossed the one line that I will never forgive."
She turned her head slightly, her eyes resting on Michael Reed, who was holding Tobin safely behind the armored SUV. The three-year-old was resting his head on the supervisor's shoulder, finally safe, wrapped securely in his mother's tailored jacket.
"You touched my son," Alessandra said, the lethal quiet of her voice returning. "You put him in the dark. You made him cry."
"Alessandra, I had to!" Gavin wept, tears of sheer panic streaming down his bruised face. He reached out, his trembling fingers grazing the hem of her tailored pantsuit. "Ethan threatened to kill me! He said if I didn't help them secure the penthouse, he would expose the child to the press! I was trying to protect the family name!"
"Do not touch me," Alessandra warned, her voice vibrating with such menace that Gavin instantly snatched his hand back.
Sybil, realizing the absolute totality of their failure, let out a pathetic, ragged sob. She collapsed against a concrete pillar, her elegant gala gown dragging in the grease and dirt. "You killed them," Sybil choked out, staring at her daughter-in-law as if looking at a demon. "You killed the council."
"I killed the traitors," Alessandra replied smoothly. "The men who remained loyal are currently moving through this hotel, clearing out every single one of Ethan’s thugs. Your coup lasted exactly as long as I allowed it to."
A low groan emanated from the pile of collapsed aluminum event-canopy frames.
Ethan Cole shifted beneath the wreckage. He pushed a heavy coat trunk off his legs, his face a ruined, bloody mess from Alessandra's counterpunch. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete, glaring up at her with a single, unswollen eye.
"You think you've won, you arrogant bitch?" Ethan snarled, his words slurring through a broken jaw. "My father… my father commands three hundred men in Boston. When he hears what you’ve done, he’ll burn this city to the ground. He’ll put a bullet in you, and he’ll put a bullet in that little brat of yours."

Alessandra didn't flinch. She didn't even look angry. She simply turned her head, fixing her cold, obsidian gaze on the bleeding enforcer.
"Your father," Alessandra said softly, "is the one who called me this morning and told me about your plan."
