Chapter 2

The heavy mechanical hum of the private VIP elevator echoed through the parking garage, a deep, resonant sound that instantly severed the arrogant conversation of the conspirators.

Gavin froze, the color draining slightly from his fair, rosy face. Ethan Cole instinctively dropped his hand toward the concealed holster beneath his tuxedo jacket, his eyes locking onto the brushed steel doors. Sybil and Vanessa exchanged a rapid, nervous glance, taking a collective step backward from the concrete pillar.

Ding.

The elevator doors slid apart with a smooth, silent grace.

Alessandra Ashford stepped out of the steel carriage. At twenty-nine, she was a terrifying vision of absolute power and lethal elegance. She wore a tailored dark three-piece pantsuit that fit her athletic frame flawlessly, paired with a pristine white silk blouse. Her family signet ring gleamed heavily on her right hand, catching the harsh garage lighting alongside a platinum wristwatch. Her polished heels struck the concrete with the rhythmic, unyielding cadence of a conquering general.

She was flanked by four heavily armed capos, all broad-shouldered white American men with hardened, unreadable expressions. But Alessandra’s eyes were not on her guards, nor were they on the traitors standing in her garage.

Her gaze locked instantly onto the filthy, trembling three-year-old boy huddled against the concrete pillar.

Alessandra froze. The air in the garage seemed to drop twenty degrees in a single second. The terrifying aura of the Mafia boss fractured for a microscopic moment, replaced by the raw, blinding panic of a mother.

"Tobin?" Alessandra breathed, her voice barely a whisper before it tore into a desperate, commanding shout. "Tobin!"

She did not walk; she rushed forward, moving with a blinding speed that made Ethan and Gavin flinch backward. She dropped to her knees on the filthy concrete, entirely uncaring of the grease staining her bespoke suit. She reached out with trembling hands, pulling the weeping child into her chest.

"Mommy!" Tobin wailed, dropping his stuffed shark to wrap his small, dirty arms around her neck. He buried his face into her silk blouse, his tiny body shaking with violent, exhaustive sobs.

"I have you. I have you, my sweet boy," Alessandra murmured fiercely, kissing his forehead, his cheeks, his hair. She unbuttoned her tailored jacket and wrapped it securely around his shivering shoulders, cocooning him in her warmth and scent. Her fair, rosy skin was flushed with an incandescent, terrifying rage as her eyes swept over his torn clothes and soot-stained face. "Who did this to you? What happened?"

Tobin pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, tears cutting clean tracks through the dirt on his face. He pointed a trembling, tiny finger toward his father.

"Mom…" Tobin cried, his voice echoing loudly in the absolute silence of the garage. "Dad helped Grandma pack my room."

Alessandra stopped breathing. The words hung in the cold air, heavy and absolute, severing the last fragile thread of her marriage.

She slowly turned her head, still kneeling on the floor, holding her son tightly against her chest. Her eyes locked onto Gavin. The look on her face was no longer that of a frantic mother; it was the dead, hollow stare of an executioner.

"Alessandra," Gavin stammered, raising his hands in a pathetic, placating gesture. His American accent wavered, betraying his absolute terror. "It’s not… it’s not what it looks like. We were just moving some things. There was a water leak in the east wing, and we had to—"

"Do not lie to me," Alessandra said. Her voice was not loud. It was a low, vibrating hum of pure, lethal intent that made the four capos behind her instantly rest their hands on their weapons. "You packed his room. You put my son in a garage."

"He is a disrespectful brat!" Sybil suddenly shrieked, her aristocratic facade crumbling under her panic. "He needed to be taught a lesson! You pamper him, Alessandra! You make him weak! This family requires strength!"

Alessandra slowly rose to her feet, lifting Tobin effortlessly into her left arm, shielding his face against her shoulder. "Strength, Sybil?" she repeated, her voice dripping with venom. "You are about to learn the true definition of strength."
