Chapter 1

The subterranean parking level of the Ashford-owned Manhattan hotel was a cavern of polished concrete, harsh fluorescent lighting, and echoing silence. The air was cool and smelled faintly of expensive tire rubber and damp limestone. Beside a massive, load-bearing concrete pillar stood three-year-old Tobin Ashford. His fair, rosy skin was smeared with dark soot and grease. His usually pristine clothes were torn and filthy, hanging loosely on his small frame. He stood trembling in the harsh light, his small arms wrapped desperately around a worn stuffed shark, his blue eyes wide with an exhausting, uncomprehending terror.
A large, heavy leather trunk sat on the concrete beside him. It was packed haphazardly, the lid bulging with his tiny designer clothes and colorful crayon drawings.
Sybil Ashford, a sixty-five-year-old woman whose elegant gala gown and heavy pearl jewelry stood in stark contrast to the grim garage, stepped forward. Her fair face, usually maintaining the illusion of aristocratic grace, was twisted into a mask of bitter, unyielding cruelty. Her low heels clicked sharply against the floor as she grabbed the heavy brass handle of the trunk.
"Move this out of the way," Sybil ordered, her voice echoing off the concrete pillars as she shoved the trunk violently toward another woman standing nearby. "I want it out of my sight before the valet shift changes."
Vanessa Cole stood a few feet away, adjusting a diamond ring on her finger. She was thirty-two, draped in a luxurious emerald evening gown that accentuated her fair, flawless complexion. She looked down at the filthy three-year-old boy with a mixture of boredom and profound disdain.
"Keep him away from my silk, Sybil," Vanessa sneered, taking a deliberate step backward. "The child smells like a wet dog. Are you sure we have to keep him down here? Can’t we just send him to a state facility and be done with it?"
Sybil scoffed, pushing the heavy trunk closer to Vanessa’s polished heels. "We do things properly, Vanessa. When the paperwork clears, he will be shipped to a boarding school in Europe. Until then, he stays out of the penthouse." She turned her cold, unforgiving eyes down to her terrified grandson. "Vanessa’s son gets your bedroom. You stay down here."
Tobin sniffled, hugging his stuffed shark tighter against his chest. "I want my mom," he whimpered, his tiny voice cracking in the vast, echoing garage. "Where is my mom?"
Gavin Ashford, Tobin’s thirty-eight-year-old father, stepped out from the shadows of a parked armored SUV. He wore an immaculate, expensive tuxedo, his polished leather shoes gleaming under the fluorescent lights. The heavy gold wedding ring on his left hand mocked the reality of the scene. He looked at his son, then quickly looked away, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair.
"Stop crying, Tobin," Gavin said, his tone clipped and impatient, laced with a cowardly edge. "Your mother is busy. She’s at a council meeting. She doesn't have time for your whining today. Just sit by the pillar and keep your mouth shut."
"You shouldn't even speak to him, Gavin," Vanessa purred, reaching out to trace the lapel of Gavin’s tuxedo with a diamond-studded finger. "He is a remnant of a mistake. Our son is the true heir. Our son will be the one sitting at the head of the Ashford table. Not this weak little runt."
"I know, Vanessa. I know," Gavin muttered, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "Once Alessandra is dealt with upstairs, the transition will be seamless. The capos will follow the bloodline. My bloodline."

"They had better," Ethan Cole interjected. Vanessa’s forty-year-old brother adjusted his own tuxedo cuffs, his fair face set in a confident, arrogant smirk. "My men are holding the perimeter. Alessandra is sitting in a room with five bosses who have already taken our bribes. She isn't coming down from that meeting, Gavin. The era of the Ice Queen is over."
Sybil folded her arms, her pearl bracelets clinking together. "Then it is finally settled. The Ashford name returns to the men. The boy stays in the garage until the cleaners arrive. Let us go back upstairs and prepare for the new regime."
