Chapter 6

Alessandra stared down at Gavin. The tailored perfection of his tuxedo was ruined, covered in garage dust and the scattered remnants of his failed escape. He looked up at her, his fair skin starkly pale beneath the angry red welt of her handprint, his breath coming in short, terrified wheezes.

Alessandra did not yell. She did not scream. When she finally spoke, her voice was ice-cold, dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register that echoed off the concrete walls with lethal precision.

"How long have you had a child with this woman?"

Gavin’s face became instantly, profoundly frightened. His eyes darted desperately toward Vanessa, who was currently frozen in terror near the exit ramp, held at gunpoint by one of Alessandra’s capos.

"Alessandra… you have to understand," Gavin stammered, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the concrete. "It… it wasn't supposed to happen. It was before we were married! I swear to God! It was a mistake!"

"A mistake," Alessandra repeated, her tone flat and merciless. "You stand in my garage, surrounded by my men, trying to steal my money, and you expect me to believe a child was a mistake?"

"It’s true!" Vanessa cried out from across the room, her voice shrill and trembling. Her luxurious evening gown shimmered absurdly against the grim backdrop of the parking garage. "He’s five years old, Alessandra! Gavin never loved you! He only married you because the council demanded it! My son is the true Ashford heir, not your pathetic little rescue project!"

The words hung in the air, heavy and toxic.

"Vanessa, shut your mouth!" Sybil hissed, realizing the mistress was actively digging their graves deeper. The older woman stepped forward, her hands raised in a placating gesture, though her pearl jewelry trembled against her collarbone. "Alessandra, listen to me. We are family. We can resolve this quietly. You can keep the businesses. You can keep the territory. Just let Gavin and the boy go. It is the honorable thing to do."

"Honorable?" Alessandra slowly turned her gaze to her mother-in-law. "You left a three-year-old boy shivering in a parking garage for nine hours. You told him his bedroom belonged to a bastard child. You packed his clothes in a trunk and told him to wait by a concrete pillar. And you dare to speak to me of honor, Sybil?"

"He is weak!" Sybil screamed, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into sheer, ugly malice. "Tobin is soft, just like you! The Cole family offered us an army! They offered us the docks! Gavin’s true son will unite the families! We had to secure the bloodline!"

Alessandra let out a low, dark chuckle that contained no humor whatsoever. It was a terrifying sound that made Gavin shrink backward into the wreckage of the equipment cases.

"You foolish, arrogant old woman," Alessandra said softly. She walked slowly toward Sybil, the clicking of her heels sounding like a ticking clock. "You really thought you could orchestrate a coup while I was sitting with the council. You thought Ethan Cole’s thugs were enough to secure my building."

"They are!" Sybil retorted, though her voice wavered. "Ethan has sixty men surrounding this hotel! The council already signed the transition papers! You have nothing left, Alessandra!"

"Is that what you believe?" Alessandra asked, stopping two feet in front of the matriarch. She raised her left hand, adjusting the cuff of her pristine silk blouse. "Do you truly think I am stupid enough to walk into a meeting of vipers without knowing exactly who paid for their fangs?"

Gavin groaned from the floor, his eyes widening in sudden, horrific realization. "Alessandra… what did you do?"

Alessandra looked down at her husband, her face an unreadable mask of pure dominance. "I didn't attend a council meeting today, Gavin. I attended an execution."
