Chapter 4

Ethan Cole was a large, violent man who had built his reputation breaking bones on the docks of the East River. He moved with the brute force of a brawler, entirely underestimating the woman standing in front of him.
"You're dead, Alessandra!" Ethan roared.
He lunged forward and grabbed Alessandra’s left shoulder with his heavy hand, attempting to rip her off balance while she was holding her son. With his right hand, he pulled his arm back and swung a massive, sweeping punch aimed directly at her jaw, intending to knock her out cold in front of her men.
Alessandra did not panic. She did not scream. She possessed the lethal, trained reflexes of a woman who had fought her way to the head of the most powerful crime syndicate on the eastern seaboard.
With breathtaking fluid grace, Alessandra twisted her torso, rotating her left shoulder backward to break his grip while simultaneously securing Tobin tighter against her hip. She slipped seamlessly outside the arc of Ethan’s wild punch. The heavy fist sailed harmlessly through the empty air where her head had just been, throwing his entire center of gravity forward.
Before Ethan could recover his balance, Alessandra planted her right heel firmly onto the concrete. She pivoted her hips, channeling the full kinetic force of her body, and drove one explosive, devastating counterpunch directly across Ethan’s face.
The sickening crunch of cartilage snapping echoed like a gunshot.
Ethan’s eyes rolled back. The sheer force of the blow lifted him off his feet, spinning his heavy frame backward like a broken ragdoll.
He flew blindly through the air, crashing spine-first into a towering, overloaded rolling luggage cart. The impact was deafening. The heavy brass cart buckled inward, rocketing backward under Ethan’s momentum.
The heavy metal wheels shrieked across the concrete as the cart slammed violently into two folded event-canopy frames stacked near the private elevator. The collision triggered a spectacular, chaotic chain reaction.
Empty plastic garment bags burst outward like a cloud of confetti. Lightweight aluminum support poles snapped and scattered wildly across the concrete floor, clattering loudly into the shadows. A massive, iron-reinforced coat trunk was caught in the avalanche; it flipped entirely onto its side with a booming thud, spilling heavy winter coats into the grease.
Ethan crashed backward through the collapsing aluminum frames, his body tangling hopelessly in the heavy canvas canopy material and scattered equipment. He hit the concrete floor with a heavy, wet thud, completely buried beneath the wreckage.
He did not get up. He did not even groan.
For a terrifying, stretched moment, the garage was completely devoid of dialogue. The only sounds were the lingering clatter of a single aluminum pole rolling to a stop against the concrete pillar, and the heavy, ragged breathing of Gavin Ashford.
Alessandra stood perfectly still in her tailored pantsuit, slowly lowering her right fist. Her knuckles were bruised, but her fair, rosy face remained an absolute mask of unbothered, lethal composure. She adjusted her grip on Tobin, ensuring her jacket was still wrapped warmly around his shoulders. The three-year-old peeked out from behind the silk collar, his wide eyes staring at the wreckage of the man who had just tried to hurt his mother.
"Is everyone quite finished pretending?" Alessandra finally asked, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
Vanessa Cole let out a high, terrified shriek, pressing her hands over her mouth as she stared at the motionless pile of equipment burying her brother. She took three rapid steps backward, her high heels clicking frantically, attempting to put as much distance between herself and Alessandra as physically possible.
Sybil Ashford clutched her pearl necklace, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly, her aristocratic arrogance entirely evaporated.
Gavin, however, broke into a blind, animalistic panic. Realizing that his muscle was incapacitated and his coup had failed spectacularly, his eyes darted wildly around the garage. He saw his wife’s capos stepping forward, drawing their weapons, sealing off the exits. He was trapped.

Desperate, Gavin’s eyes locked onto the heavy leather trunk sitting on the concrete—the trunk packed with Tobin's clothes.
"We have to go! Vanessa, get to the car!" Gavin yelled hysterically.
