Chapter 3

Before Alessandra could issue the order to have her husband and mother-in-law restrained, the heavy metal door of the security office swung open.
Michael Reed marched out onto the concrete floor. He was forty-seven years old, dressed in a crisp, professional hotel parking supervisor uniform with a gleaming identification badge pinned to his chest. His trousers were perfectly pressed, his heavy work shoes scuffing slightly against the floor. Despite his working-class attire, there was an undeniable hardness in his fair, weathered face—the look of a man who had seen decades of underworld violence and knew exactly where his loyalties lay.
"Stop right there, Reed!" Gavin barked, stepping forward in a desperate attempt to assert authority. He raised his hand, trying to physically block the supervisor from approaching his wife. "Get back in your booth! This is private family business! Turn around and walk away, or I'll have you thrown into the river!"
Michael did not even blink. He shoved his broad shoulder forward, easily brushing Gavin aside like a nuisance. Gavin stumbled in his expensive leather shoes, his face flushing with humiliated rage.
Michael walked directly up to Alessandra, stopping a respectful three feet away. He ignored the guns currently half-drawn by the capos. He looked directly into Alessandra’s eyes, his expression firm, loyal, and burning with righteous anger.
"Boss…" Michael said firmly, his deep American accent echoing clearly off the concrete walls. He pointed a calloused finger down at the dirty floor where Tobin had been standing. "The boy has been here for nine hours straight."
Every single capo in Alessandra’s detail turned their heads in absolute unison, their cold, predatory eyes locking onto Gavin Ashford.
"Nine hours," Alessandra repeated, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She looked down at the heavy trunk, at the empty juice box on the floor, at the exhaustion etched into her son’s fair, tear-streaked face.
"They brought him down here at two in the afternoon," Michael continued, glaring at Sybil and Vanessa. "They told my men that if anyone offered the boy food, water, or a chair, they would be fired and blacklisted. They left him standing by that pillar. I tried to call your encrypted line, Boss, but the signal was jammed from the penthouse."
"You lying piece of trash!" Ethan Cole roared, stepping forward and jabbing a finger at the supervisor. "You have no idea what you’re talking about! We were securing the building! We put him down here for his own safety!"
"You put a three-year-old child in a freezing garage for nine hours while you drank champagne in the penthouse," Alessandra said. Her voice was so deadly quiet it commanded the vast space more effectively than a scream.
"Alessandra, please listen to reason!" Gavin pleaded, sweat breaking out across his forehead. He backed away slightly as one of the capos took a menacing step toward him. "The council meeting… we thought the hotel was going to be attacked! We were trying to protect him!"
"If you were trying to protect him, Gavin," Alessandra said, her eyes shifting to the luxurious emerald gown worn by his mistress, "why is Vanessa Cole standing here wearing my grandmother’s diamonds?"
Vanessa instinctively covered her necklace with her hand, taking a frightened step backward behind her brother.
"She is my guest!" Sybil intervened, her voice shrill and desperate. "You have alienated the other families, Alessandra! We had to build bridges! Ethan and Vanessa are vital to the future of this syndicate! Gavin understands what you refuse to see!"
"What I see," Alessandra said, her free right hand balling into a tight, white-knuckled fist at her side, "is a husband who abandoned his son to the concrete, a mother-in-law who orchestrated it, and a pair of parasites who thought they could usurp a throne while the Queen was in the boardroom."
She looked back at Michael. "Thank you, Michael. Your loyalty will not be forgotten."
"Anytime, Boss," Michael nodded, stepping back into a defensive posture.

Ethan Cole, realizing the diplomatic facade had entirely collapsed and their coup was unraveling by the second, let out a frustrated, furious snarl. "She’s just one woman!" he shouted to his men, though none were visible in the garage. He turned his enraged, fair face back to Alessandra. "You think you can judge us? You’re finished!"
Ethan lunged forward, closing the distance with terrifying speed.
