Chapter 9

The firefight inside the Blackwood cabin was a chaotic symphony of destruction. The deafening roar of automatic weapons tore through the thick concrete walls, vibrating into the cast-iron tub where Mara huddled. Plaster and splinters rained down as bullets punched through the wooden door of the bathroom. Mara screamed, curling her body entirely over Theo, squeezing her eyes shut in the absolute darkness.
Bruno stood rigidly above them, barking furiously at the door, his deep, guttural snarls mixing with the screams of dying men in the living room. Mara gripped the 9mm pistol Silas had given her, her knuckles white, her fair skin coated in a cold sweat.
In the main room, Silas fought like an avenging demon. The Lane hit squad had breached the front door with a specialized explosive, pouring into the cabin with tactical precision. But Silas and Dante were waiting. Silas moved with lethal, fluid grace, his heavy pistol barking as he dropped two mercenaries stepping through the smoke.
"Flank them!" a voice yelled from the breach. It was Julian, the traitorous head of security, leading the Lane men.
"I’m going to cut your heart out, Julian!" Silas roared over the gunfire, diving behind the overturned oak table as a hail of bullets shredded the leather sofa where Mara had been sitting moments before.
Dante laid down suppressing fire with an assault rifle, buying Silas enough time to reload. "Boss, there's too many! They have the high ground outside!"
"Hold the line!" Silas commanded, his angular jaw locked in a grimace of pure rage.
Suddenly, the reinforced window near the hallway shattered. A Lane mercenary had managed to pry the steel shutter open, slipping into the cabin behind their defensive line. He raised his submachine gun, aiming directly at Silas's exposed back.
Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, the bathroom door burst open. Bruno had thrown his massive weight against the damaged wood, breaking the lock. The German Shepherd launched himself through the air like a guided missile, seventy pounds of muscle and teeth slamming directly into the mercenary's chest.
The man screamed as Bruno’s jaws locked onto his tactical vest, dragging him to the floor. The distraction was exactly what Silas needed. He whipped around, firing a single, precise shot that ended the mercenary's life.
Bruno released the man and immediately stood over his body, panting heavily, turning his sharp gaze to protect the hallway where Mara was hiding.
"Good boy," Silas breathed heavily, a feral smile crossing his lips.
The tide of the battle shifted. Silas pushed forward, abandoning his cover. He moved through the smoke, his weapon flashing in the dim emergency lighting. He found Julian hiding near the breached doorway.
Julian raised his gun, his eyes wide with terror, but he was too slow. Silas fired twice, hitting Julian squarely in the chest. The traitor collapsed into the snow outside the cabin, dead before he hit the ground.
Seeing their leader fall, the remaining Lane mercenaries panicked. Dante and the surviving Ashford guards pushed the advantage, driving the hit squad out into the freezing night, cutting them down as they tried to flee to their vehicles.
Silence slowly fell over the ruined cabin, broken only by the crackle of small fires and the groans of the dying.
Silas stood in the center of the wreckage, his dark turtleneck torn at the shoulder where a bullet had grazed his flesh, bleeding profusely. He dropped his empty pistol and stumbled toward the hallway.

"Mara," Silas called out, his voice hoarse and raw.
Mara climbed out of the tub, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped the gun. She ran out of the bathroom and threw herself into Silas's arms, burying her face in his bleeding shoulder. He crushed her to his chest, burying his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of her survival. They had made it through the night, but the cost was astronomical.
