Chapter 2

Silas Ashford moved through the parted sea of his guests with a terrifying, lethal grace. He was a devastatingly handsome, masculine mafia boss with broad shoulders and a sharp, angular jaw. His naturally swept-back hair and extremely short stubble gave him a rugged, dangerous edge that sharply contrasted with his tailored dark three-piece suit. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, and a luxury wristwatch peeked from his crisp cuff. Striking artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers, moving fluidly as his fists clenched. A small, intricate artistic tattoo was just visible above his collar.
He stopped a few feet away, surveying the scene. Veronica was clutching her torn sleeve, her face flushed with rage. Mara was kneeling on the polished marble, holding Bruno’s loose leash while Theo stood safely and closely beside her.
Mara looked directly at the approaching Silas, her clear eyes filled with a desperate, protective fire. She refused to let the animal take the blame for the woman's cruelty.
"Please," Mara said, her voice projecting clearly into the silent foyer. "Bruno was protecting Theo."
Veronica gasped in mock outrage. She briefly glanced toward Theo, ensuring the child wasn't bleeding, before facing Silas. Her expression shifted seamlessly into that of a carefully indignant, traumatized victim. She held up her torn deep-plum satin sleeve like a flag of martyrdom.
"It attacked me!" Veronica cried out, her diamond earrings shaking as she pointed a manicured finger at the German Shepherd. "It attacked him, Silas! Have it destroyed immediately!"
Before Silas could issue a command, a tiny, bell-like voice cut through the heavy tension of the room. Theo looked up at his towering father, his round rosy cheeks pale but determined. He pointed a small finger directly toward Veronica, innocently describing the reality of the incident.
"Auntie push," Theo said softly, the natural toddler pauses making his words distinct and utterly devastating in the quiet room. "Bruno help."
Silas’s entire demeanor shifted. The cold, calculating mafia boss turned into a fiercely protective father. He stepped forward, stopping right beside Theo. He did not look at his fiancée, nor did he look at the torn gown. He looked directly at the trembling maid in the black uniform. Every guest in the immediate vicinity fell dead silent, the hush spreading like wildfire until the entire mansion was muted.
"Mara," Silas said quietly, the measured, terrifying pause in his deep voice carrying more weight than a scream. "What happened?"
Mara met Silas’s intense, piercing gaze. She knew the power Veronica’s family wielded in the underworld, and she knew speaking the truth could cost her everything. But looking at the little boy holding her creased apron, she steadied a trembling breath.
"Veronica shoved Theo," Mara stated, her voice fragile but unyielding. "Bruno stopped her."

Silas did not blink. He reached down and gently took Bruno’s leash from Mara’s hand. He remained standing tall beside Theo. Bruno, recognizing his master's absolute authority, immediately sat calmly at Silas’s side, a perfectly trained soldier.
Mara remained on her knees, resting a reassuring, protective hand on Theo’s small shoulder. Silas finally turned his head. He fixed Veronica with a cold, unwavering stare, his dark eyes entirely devoid of mercy. The silence in the grand foyer was no longer just quiet; it was the suffocating silence before a brutal execution.
