Chapter 5

The morning sun struggled to pierce the thick, grey winter clouds hanging heavily over the Ashford estate. Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The delicate Christmas decorations in the grand foyer had been abandoned, replaced by the grim reality of a mafia stronghold preparing for a siege. Heavily armed guards patrolled the hallways, the windows were reinforced with steel shutters, and the gates were locked down with armored vehicles.

Mara sat in the center of the massive, luxurious master suite, holding Theo in her lap as they read a picture book. She was no longer wearing the fitted black maid dress. By Silas’s strict orders, she had been provided with a soft, charcoal-grey cashmere sweater and tailored black trousers. Her loose strands of hair were finally brushed and pulled back into a neat, elegant clip. She felt like an imposter, sitting on the mafia king's bed.

Bruno was pacing restlessly by the reinforced window, letting out a low, continuous growl. The German Shepherd's instincts were on high alert, sensing the impending violence long before the humans could.

"It's okay, Bruno," Mara soothed, though her own voice trembled.

A sharp knock at the door preceded Silas’s entrance. He was dressed in a dark turtleneck that clung to his muscular chest, a shoulder holster strapped over his muscles carrying a heavy, matte-black pistol. The small artistic tattoo above his collar was stark against his fair skin. He looked exhausted, yet thrumming with dangerous, calculated focus.

"Did you sleep?" Silas asked, his dark eyes immediately assessing her pale, rosy skin for signs of distress.

"A little," Mara replied, closing the book. "Theo slept through the night. Bruno didn't."

"He knows they're out there," Silas murmured, walking over to the window and peering through the reinforced slits. "Vincent Lane sent an ultimatum an hour ago. He wants me to hand you and the dog over, and publicly apologize to Veronica for breaking the engagement. If I refuse, he promises to level this estate."

Mara’s breath hitched, terror flooding her clear eyes. "You have to give us to them, Silas. You can't fight a war over a maid and a dog. The Lane family has politicians, they have the ports... they will destroy everything you've built."

Silas turned away from the window, his expression hardening into stone. He crossed the room and knelt in front of the bed, bringing himself eye-level with her.

"Listen to me carefully, Mara," Silas said, his voice deadly serious. "I do not negotiate with men who allow their daughters to abuse children. I do not hand over the people under my protection to save my own skin. You and Bruno saved my son. My life belongs to you both."

"They will kill you," Mara whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek.

"I have survived far worse men than Vincent Lane," Silas murmured, reaching up to wipe the tear away with his tattooed thumb. "I am moving you to the mountain safehouse. It's a fortress. I need you and Theo out of the crossfire so I can dismantle the Lane syndicate without worrying about your safety."

Before Mara could process the plan, a deafening explosion rocked the eastern wing of the mansion. The floorboards shuddered violently, throwing Mara and Theo back onto the mattress. The blaring wail of the estate's security alarms shattered the morning silence, drowning out the sound of shattering glass.

The Lane family hadn't waited for an answer. The siege had begun.

"Get down!" Silas roared, drawing his weapon. He threw himself over the bed, shielding Mara and Theo with his broad back as a second explosion rattled the heavy wooden doors of the master suite. Bruno barked furiously, standing protectively at the foot of the bed, ready to tear apart anyone who came through the door.
