Chapter 3

The tension in the grand foyer was a physical weight pressing against the chests of the gathered elite. The silence stretched for ten agonizing seconds. Veronica’s carefully crafted indignation began to crumble under Silas’s glacial stare, her fair skin draining of color.

"Silas, darling," Veronica stammered, her voice losing its haughty edge. She tried to step closer, her torn sleeve hanging limply at her side. "You cannot possibly take the word of a servant over mine. The boy is confused. The dog lunged, and I merely tried to step out of the way. It was a chaotic moment."

"My son is not confused," Silas replied, his voice a low, guttural rumble that echoed off the gilded mirrors. "And Bruno does not attack without provocation. I trained him myself."

"Are you calling me a liar in front of our guests?" Veronica demanded, her voice rising in a shrill panic. Her father, Vincent Lane, a notorious underboss in the city, pushed his way to the front of the crowd, his face purple with outrage.

"Silas, what is the meaning of this disrespect?" Vincent barked. "My daughter has been assaulted by your mutt, and you stand there interrogating a maid?"

Silas slowly shifted his gaze to Vincent, the negative space tattoos on his fingers stark against the dark fabric of his suit as he adjusted his grip on the leash. "Your daughter laid hands on my blood, Vincent. She pushed a three-year-old child toward a marble staircase. If it were anyone else, they would already be dead on this floor."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. The alliance between the Ashford and Lane families was the only thing keeping the city from descending into a full-scale mafia war.

"She is your future wife!" Vincent roared. "You will discipline your staff and put that animal down!"

"The engagement is over," Silas stated, the words striking the room like a physical blow. "The wedding is canceled. Take your daughter and get out of my house before I forget the history between our families."

"You cannot do this," Veronica breathed, tears of genuine humiliation welling in her eyes. "You will ruin everything we've built for a clumsy maid and a filthy dog?"

"I am securing my empire," Silas said coldly. He turned to his heavily armed guards stationed around the perimeter. "Escort the Lane family off the property. The reception is over. Everyone else, go home."

The room erupted into chaotic murmurs, but the guests scrambled to obey, rushing toward the coat checks and the heavy front doors. Silas ignored them entirely. He knelt on the floor, bringing himself down to eye level with Mara and Theo.

"Are you hurt, buddy?" Silas asked, his voice softening entirely as he ran a large hand through Theo's soft curls.

"No, Papa," Theo said, throwing his arms around his father's neck. "Bruno saved me."

"I know he did," Silas whispered, hugging his son tightly. He looked over Theo's shoulder at Mara. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, and her hands were shaking where they rested on her creased white apron.

"Come with me, Mara," Silas commanded gently, standing up and lifting Theo into his arms. "Bring the dog. We need to talk in my study, away from this mess."

"Yes, Mr. Ashford," Mara whispered. She stood on trembling legs, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She knew the Lane family would not accept this humiliation quietly. By speaking the truth, she had just ignited a war that could burn the city to the ground.
