Chapter 1

A crowded Christmas reception filled the Ashford mansion’s grand foyer, a space designed to intimidate and dazzle the city's criminal elite. Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the entire area with a warm, golden light that danced across the faces of ruthless men and their glamorous wives. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting endlessly in the gilded mirrors that lined the walls. Polished marble floors gleamed beneath carved walnut furniture and plush burgundy velvet sofas. Evergreen garlands wrapped tightly around the sweeping grand staircase, filling the air with the sharp, fresh scent of pine. Beside the gathered guests, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with golden lights and heavy crimson ornaments.
Mara Hollis stood near the base of the staircase, her clear, expressive eyes scanning the room. She was a gentle maid with delicate features and fair, rosy skin that flushed in the heat of the crowded room. She wore a fitted black maid dress, a pristine white collar and cuffs, and a white ruffled maid headband. Loose strands of hair framed her face, having escaped her neat updo, and her white apron was distinctly creased from the hours she had spent kneeling on the floor to comfort three-year-old Theo.
Theo, with his round rosy cheeks, soft curls, and tiny dimples, was playing near the bottom step. He wore a cream reindeer sweater, red corduroy overalls, and little brown boots. Sitting calmly at Mara's side on a loose leash was Bruno, a massive, four-year-old German Shepherd. The dog was exceptionally well-trained, a silent guardian amidst the chaos of the mafia gathering.
"You are always underfoot, aren't you?" a sharp, venomous voice hissed.
Mara looked up to see Veronica Lane, Silas’s fiancée, approaching. Veronica wore a breathtaking deep-plum satin gown that clung to her figure, and heavy diamond earrings that flashed like warning beacons. Her fair skin was powdered to perfection, but her eyes held a cruel, aristocratic disdain.
"I apologize, Miss Lane," Mara said softly, stepping forward. "Theo was just resting for a moment. We will move to the playroom."
"He shouldn't be at this reception at all," Veronica snapped, glaring at the toddler. "He's a distraction. And that filthy beast shouldn't be inside the house."
"Bruno is a certified protection dog, Miss Lane," Mara replied, keeping her voice even, though her heart hammered against her ribs. "Mr. Ashford insisted he remain with Theo at all times."
Veronica scoffed, stepping closer to the stairs. Theo, startled by her harsh tone, took a clumsy step backward. He was dangerously close to the sharp edge of the marble bottom step.
"Get out of my way, you little brat," Veronica hissed, losing her temper.
In a moment of shocking cruelty, Veronica reached out and angrily shoved the three-year-old by his shoulder. Theo stumbled backward, his little arms flailing as he lost his balance near the hard marble edge.
Before Mara could scream, Bruno moved like lightning. The massive German Shepherd stepped directly between Theo and the stair edge, acting as a living wall. Theo fell safely against the dog's thick fur, uninjured. But Bruno didn't stop there. He snapped his jaws forward, catching the sleeve of Veronica’s deep-plum satin gown to push her back. The delicate fabric ripped with a loud, tearing sound.

"Get this monster off me!" Veronica shrieked at the top of her lungs, shattering the elegant hum of the reception.
Mara instantly dropped to her knees, pulling Theo into her arms to ensure he was safe, while gently grasping Bruno's collar to pull him back. The music stopped. The guests froze. And from across the grand foyer, the imposing figure of Silas Ashford began to carve a path through the silent crowd.
