Chapter 10

The dawn broke over the jagged mountains, casting a pale, cold light on the carnage surrounding the Blackwood cabin. The snow was stained crimson, the bodies of the Lane hit squad scattered across the driveway. Silas’s reinforcements had arrived shortly after sunrise in a fleet of heavily armored helicopters, securing the area and treating the wounded.
The war was effectively over. Vincent Lane had gambled his entire elite strike force on the safehouse and lost. Without his top men, the Lane syndicate was vulnerable, and Silas had already given the order for his captains in the city to dismantle what was left of their empire.
Silas sat on the tailgate of an armored SUV, his shoulder heavily bandaged by a syndicate medic. He wore a fresh dark coat over his ruined clothes, looking exhausted but victorious. Bruno sat faithfully at his side, receiving affectionate pats from the guards who had witnessed the dog's bravery.
Mara walked out of the cabin, holding a sleeping Theo tightly in her arms. She looked at the destruction, a profound sadness in her clear, expressive eyes, but when she looked at Silas, a fierce, undeniable love warmed her chest.
She walked over to him. Silas immediately stood up, gently taking Theo from her arms and passing the toddler to a trusted nanny who had arrived with the reinforcements. He then turned his full attention to Mara.
"It's over," Silas murmured, reaching out to gently cup her face. His tattooed fingers were cold, but his touch sent a shiver of warmth down her spine. "The Lanes are broken. You are safe."
"What happens now?" Mara whispered, leaning into his hand. "I can't go back to being a maid, Silas. Not after this."
"You were never just a maid," Silas replied, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that commanded her entire focus. "You are the woman who saved my son. You are the woman who stood by me in the dark. We are returning to the estate, and you will walk through those front doors by my side. You belong with me, Mara. Officially."
Tears of pure relief welled in her eyes. She didn't hesitate. She closed the distance between them, pressing her lips to his in a desperate, passionate kiss, sealing their bloody, violent bond.
They boarded the lead helicopter, Bruno taking up the entire floor space, and began the flight back to the city to reclaim their throne. The Ashford syndicate was stronger than ever, their enemies decimated.
But true peace in the underworld is a myth.
Later that evening, as Silas sat in his restored study at the main estate, pouring a glass of amber liquid to celebrate his victory, the encrypted satellite phone on his desk began to ring.
It wasn't Vincent Lane. It wasn't one of his captains.
Silas picked up the receiver, his brow furrowing. "Speak."
Static crackled across the line for a long, agonizing moment. Then, a smooth, chillingly familiar voice echoed through the speaker—a voice Silas hadn't heard in five years. A voice that belonged to a man he had personally buried.
"You survived Marcus Lane, little brother," the voice whispered, dripping with dark amusement. "I'm impressed. But you've gotten soft, bringing a maid into the family. You won't survive me."

The line went dead.
Silas’s blood ran completely cold, the glass slipping from his hand and shattering on the floor. His presumed-dead brother had returned, and the real war had only just begun.
