Chapter 9

The bodyguards moved with swift, silent efficiency. One hauled Julian to his feet, ignoring the man’s desperate, panicked pleading. The other grabbed Victor by the collar of his ruined suit, dragging him out of the scattered luggage. A third guard, who had been stationed by the door, walked over and grabbed Bianca by the arm, lifting her from the floor as she wept hysterically.

"Sofia! Please!" Julian screamed, struggling against the massive bodyguard’s grip as he was dragged toward the door. "I am your husband! Do not let him do this! Please, Sofia!"

Sofia sat in her hospital bed, her fair face pale and stained with tears. She looked at the man she had married, the man who had just attempted to sell their newborn son to a Russian cartel. Her expression hardened, a glimpse of her father’s ruthless strength shining through her exhaustion.

"You stopped being my husband the second you touched that bassinet," Sofia said, her voice cold and absolute. "Take him out of my sight."

The heavy wooden doors of the maternity suite were pulled open, and the Mercer family was dragged out into the service corridor. The doors clicked shut, plunging the suite back into a profound, echoing silence, broken only by the soft cooing of the newborns and the quiet rustle of Nurse Claire shifting nervously by the window.

Lorenzo stood in the center of the ruined visitor lounge for a long moment, looking at the destroyed refreshment station, the crushed water bottles, and the scattered magazines. The bright, natural light illuminated the total devastation of the room, a physical manifestation of the violence that had just occurred.

He slowly turned and walked back toward his daughter. The terrifying, intimidating aura of the Mafia Boss seemed to retract, softening into the deeply protective presence of a father. He approached the bed, his polished leather shoes silent on the floor, and gently took Sofia’s trembling hand in his own.

"Are you hurt, my beautiful girl?" Lorenzo asked softly, his voice finally losing its cold, dangerous edge.

"No, Dad," Sofia whispered, tears welling in her eyes again as she squeezed his hand. "I'm just... I'm so scared. What if you hadn't come in time?"

"I am always... exactly where I need to be," Lorenzo assured her, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. "They will never... touch you... or my grandchildren... ever again."

He stood back up and looked over at Nurse Claire, who was still standing protectively in front of the three clear bassinets. The nurse was trembling slightly, terrified of the man standing before her.

"Nurse Claire," Lorenzo said, his voice smooth and polite. "You have my profound gratitude. You protected my family today. You will be... very well compensated... for your discretion."

"Thank you, Mr. Ravelli," Claire stammered, bowing her head slightly. "I just wanted to keep the babies safe."

"Bring them to her," Lorenzo instructed softly.

Nurse Claire carefully rolled the three clear bassinets to the side of Sofia’s bed. Sofia reached out, her fingers gently grazing the soft hospital blankets wrapping her three beautiful, sleeping newborns. The absolute terror of the afternoon began to fade, replaced by a fierce, overwhelming surge of maternal love. She had survived, and her children were safe.

But as Lorenzo watched his daughter gaze lovingly at her babies, a dark, calculating thought crept into his mind. The Mercers had been dealt with, but the Volkov syndicate was still waiting downstairs.
