Chapter 8

The sheer magnitude of the betrayal settled over the room, casting a suffocating weight upon the bright, vividly colored maternity suite. The Volkov syndicate was an organization known for its absolute brutality, a rival faction that Lorenzo had spent the last decade keeping out of his territory. To hand them a newborn Ravelli child was not just a kidnapping; it was an act of high treason that would have paralyzed Lorenzo’s empire.

Sofia let out a horrified, breathless gasp from her hospital bed. "Julian... you sold our baby? You sold your own son to the Russians to pay your debts?"

Julian, still gasping for air in the armchair, could not meet his wife's eyes. He stared at the scattered paper cups and crushed water bottles on the floor, his fair, rosy skin flushed with deep, irredeemable shame.

"Sofia, I... I had to protect the family name," Julian wheezed, his voice pathetic and weak. "If we went bankrupt, we would be nothing. The Volkovs promised he would be treated like royalty! They just wanted him as a guarantee that your father wouldn't interfere with their shipping routes!"

"You... are a coward," Lorenzo whispered. The veteran Mafia Boss did not shout. The sheer disgust in his low, measured voice was infinitely more terrifying. "You traded your own blood... because you were too weak... to face the consequences... of your own failures."

Lorenzo slowly turned away from Bianca, who was still sobbing on the floor, and walked back toward the center of the room. He stood over Julian, his deeply masculine, intimidating presence completely overwhelming the younger man.

"You believed... that my grandson... was currency," Lorenzo said, his cold, dangerous eyes piercing straight through Julian’s soul. "You believed... that you could make a deal... with monsters... and walk away clean."

"Lorenzo, please, we can fix this," Victor pleaded from the corner, desperately trying to untangle himself from the collapsed luggage stands. "I still have political favors to call in! We can get the money! We can pay the Volkovs!"

"The Volkovs... are no longer... your concern," Lorenzo stated, adjusting his tailored suit jacket with a slow, deliberate movement. "They are... my concern. Your concern... is how long... you can hold your breath."

Julian’s head snapped up, genuine terror flooding his bruised face. "What are you talking about? Lorenzo, you can't kill us! We are high-profile! If we disappear, the police will investigate! It will bring the feds down on your entire organization!"

"People... disappear... every day," Lorenzo murmured softly, a terrifying, humorless smile touching the corner of his lips. "Sometimes... they take a private flight... to Europe... and the plane... experiences mechanical failure... over the Atlantic. It is... a tragic... accident."

The bright, cinematic lighting of the room offered no comfort to the Mercer family. The crisp, clean environment felt like a sterile execution chamber. They realized, with absolute certainty, that all their wealth, their status, and their arrogance meant absolutely nothing against the cold, calculated wrath of Lorenzo Ravelli.

"Take them," Lorenzo commanded his bodyguards, his volume barely above a whisper. "Use the freight elevator. Make sure... they are not seen."
