Chapter 1

The private Manhattan maternity suite was a masterpiece of modern medicine and immense wealth, bathed entirely in brilliant, cinematic daylight. Floor-to-ceiling windows allowed the crisp, natural sun to pour across the room, ensuring there was not a single trace of a dull or yellow tint in the air. The bright, vivid colors of the pristine white walls and the lush floral arrangements created a surreal, beautiful atmosphere. In the center of the room, Sofia Ravelli rested against her elevated hospital pillows. At twenty-six years old, she was breathtakingly beautiful by every American standard, her fair, rosy skin glowing despite the sheer exhaustion of recently delivering triplets. She wore a simple hospital gown, a patient wristband, and standard hospital socks, yet she looked undeniably elegant.

Just a few feet away, three newborn babies were wrapped securely in soft hospital blankets, sleeping peacefully inside separate clear bassinets. The quiet sanctuary of the room, however, was currently being suffocated by the presence of the Mercer family.

Julian Mercer, Sofia’s thirty-six-year-old husband, stood near the foot of her bed. He was dressed in an expensive, perfectly tailored suit, his luxury wristwatch catching the bright sunlight. Beside him stood his sixty-five-year-old father, Victor Mercer, wearing a formal suit and polished leather shoes. Bianca, Julian’s thirty-three-year-old sister, lingered near the bassinets in an elegant designer dress, her heels clicking softly against the pristine tile. They all shared the same fair, rosy complexion and crisp American accents, but their demeanor was cold and calculating.

"Julian, why is she standing so close to them?" Sofia asked, her voice trembling slightly as she clutched the edge of her thin blanket. "They just fell asleep. Please tell your sister to step back."

"Relax, Sofia. We are simply admiring the new additions to the family," Julian replied smoothly, his tone laced with a dismissive arrogance that made Sofia’s stomach tighten with dread.

But Victor was not just admiring the children. The older man reached his hands into the furthest clear bassinet. With terrifyingly swift precision, Victor lifted the smallest newborn securely into his arms. The baby immediately awoke, letting out a sharp, piercing cry that shattered the bright, quiet sanctuary of the suite. Victor turned his back on the bed and started carrying the crying baby directly toward Bianca, who held her arms open with a sickening, entitled smile.

"What are you doing?" Sofia gasped, maternal panic instantly overriding her severe physical pain. She lunged forward, reaching desperately from the bed, her fingers straining toward her child. "Put him back! Julian, stop him right now!"

Julian did not help her. Instead, he stepped to the side of the bed, his face set in a mask of total indifference. He reached out and deliberately moved the bedside call button, sliding the plastic device across the tray table just beyond her straining fingertips.

"Julian, please!" Sofia begged, tears spilling hot and fast down her rosy cheeks. "What is happening? Why are you doing this to me?"

Victor stopped beside Bianca and looked back at Sofia with eyes utterly devoid of human warmth.

"You have three," Victor stated coldly, his voice echoing with absolute authority in the bright room. "Bianca gets one."
