Chapter 10

The serene quiet of the maternity suite was a stark contrast to the storm brewing in Lorenzo’s mind. He stood near the foot of Sofia’s bed, his hands resting casually in the pockets of his tailored trousers. The bright, cinematic sunlight continued to pour through the windows, reflecting off his heavy gold signet ring. He watched his daughter whisper softly to her three newborns, ensuring they were all safe and undisturbed by the horrific violence that had just transpired.

"Dad," Sofia said quietly, looking up from the bassinets. Her fair, rosy skin was returning to its normal color. "What are you going to do about the Volkovs?"

Lorenzo did not answer immediately. He slowly pulled his hands from his pockets and smoothed the lapels of his dark suit jacket. His handsome, angular face remained perfectly composed, but his eyes were dark and calculating, assessing the tactical landscape of the impending war.

"The Volkovs... are arrogant," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping back into that slow, measured, dangerous cadence. "They believe... because they operate in the shadows... they are untouchable. They believed... they could use a weak man... to steal from my house."

He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the bustling Manhattan streets below. The bright, natural light illuminated his sharp profile, the short, well-groomed beard emphasizing his strong jawline.

"They are waiting downstairs," Lorenzo murmured, almost to himself. "Expecting... a quiet exchange."

Just then, the heavy doors to the suite opened again. A towering, broad-shouldered bodyguard stepped inside, his dark suit perfectly pressed. He walked briskly over to Lorenzo, leaning in to whisper discreetly in his ear.

"Boss," the bodyguard said, his American accent low and professional. "Our men intercepted a black SUV idling in the underground parking garage. Three heavily armed men inside. They match the profiles of Volkov enforcers. They are getting impatient."

Lorenzo did not blink. He kept his eyes fixed on the street below. The fact that the Volkov syndicate had sent armed men directly into the hospital to collect his grandson was an insult that demanded absolute, catastrophic retaliation.

"Did they see the Mercers leave?" Lorenzo asked quietly.

"No, sir. We routed Julian and his family through the secure freight tunnels. The Volkovs are still waiting for the drop."

A cold, terrifying smile touched the corners of Lorenzo’s mouth. It was a smile that promised violence on a scale the city had not seen in decades. He slowly turned away from the window, his imposing, masculine presence filling the room once more.

"Leave them in the garage," Lorenzo commanded, his voice dripping with lethal intent. "Do not engage them. Let them sit in the dark... and wait."

"Sir?" the bodyguard asked, confused by the order to stand down.

"We do not... kill the messengers," Lorenzo explained slowly, walking back toward the center of the room. "We send a message... back with them."

He looked at Sofia, who was watching him with a mixture of fear and profound respect. She knew exactly what that look on her father's face meant.

"Rest, Sofia," Lorenzo said softly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Keep the doors locked. I have to go downstairs... and explain to our Russian friends... that the delivery... has been permanently canceled."

Without another word, Lorenzo Ravelli turned and walked out of the brightly lit maternity suite, the heavy doors closing behind him as he descended into the darkness to start a war.
