Chapter 3

Lorenzo Ravelli did not shout. He did not run. He walked with a slow, predatory grace that instantly sucked all the oxygen out of the bright, spacious room. His polished leather shoes made no sound against the tile floor. He bypassed Julian completely, walking straight toward Victor Mercer.

Before Victor could even process the sudden intrusion, Lorenzo reached out with massive, steady hands. He took the newborn safely from the older man’s grasp. Victor was too paralyzed by the sheer, masculine intimidation radiating from the Mafia Boss to offer any resistance. Lorenzo turned immediately, his expression an unreadable mask of cold fury, and handed the crying baby to Nurse Claire, who had rushed to Sofia’s bedside.

Sofia collapsed back against her elevated pillows, clutching her chest as Nurse Claire gently placed the baby in her trembling arms.

"I have you, my sweet boy," Sofia wept, pressing the child to her chest, her fair face buried in the soft hospital blanket.

Lorenzo moved with deliberate, terrifying precision. He gently grasped the frames of the clear bassinets, seamlessly rolling all three of them safely behind the protective wall formed by Nurse Claire and his two towering bodyguards. He ensured his daughter and his grandchildren were completely insulated from the Mercer family.

Julian Mercer, attempting to salvage his fractured pride and patriarchal authority in front of his father and sister, made a catastrophic miscalculation. He stepped directly into Lorenzo’s path. Julian’s expensive tailored suit and luxury wristwatch suddenly looked incredibly cheap compared to the raw power radiating from his father-in-law.

"You need to step back, Lorenzo," Julian said, trying to inject an arrogant bravado into his crisp American accent, though his hands trembled slightly. He reached out and aggressively grabbed the lapel of Lorenzo’s dark, tailored suit jacket. "She is my wife. Stay out of this."

The room went dead silent. The only sound was the soft cooing of the newborns safely tucked away behind the bodyguards.

Lorenzo did not immediately react to the physical contact. He simply looked down at Julian’s hand clutching his expensive fabric. He stared at it as if he were observing a fascinating, yet entirely insignificant, insect. Then, he slowly raised his dark, penetrating eyes to meet Julian's gaze.

"Your wife," Lorenzo murmured. He spoke slowly, inserting controlled, deliberate pauses between his words. He kept his volume remarkably low, yet every syllable sounded measured, cold, and incredibly dangerous. "Is my... blood. You... are merely... a temporary... arrangement."

With a movement so smooth and effortlessly powerful it defied his fifty-five years, Lorenzo raised his right hand. The heavy gold signet ring caught the bright cinematic light as he slowly, deliberately peeled Julian’s fingers off his lapel, bending the younger man's wrist backward just enough to elicit a sharp gasp of pain.

"You do not... touch me," Lorenzo stated softly, dropping Julian’s hand with absolute disgust.

Julian’s jaw clenched. Driven by blind, arrogant rage and the desperate need to assert his dominance in front of his family, he balled his right hand into a fist, shifting his weight to strike the man who had just humiliated him.
