Chapter 5

The silence was profound, heavy, and suffocating. The bright, cinematic natural light offered no warmth to the terrified onlookers. The elite white American guests, the seasoned capos, and the heavily armed bodyguards stood paralyzed, their fair and rosy faces pale with shock.

Luciano took a slow, measured step toward the ruined scoring-equipment trolley. His polished leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the floorboards, stepping deliberately over a fallen analog box. He stopped a few feet from where Odessa lay trapped beneath the tangled reel cables.

"I asked you a question, Odessa," Luciano murmured, his voice dropping into a freezing, barely audible whisper. "Why did you need my daughter out of this room?"

Odessa pushed a heavy coil of cable off her chest, gasping for breath. Her luxurious formal gown was torn, her diamond necklace broken, the stones scattering across the floor. She looked up at her younger cousin, and the sheer terror in her eyes was unmistakable.

"I... I didn't," Odessa whimpered, her voice a pathetic, trembling shadow of her former arrogance. "I just... I just wanted to teach her a lesson. She was being a nuisance."

"Do not insult my intelligence," Luciano warned, his jaw tightening. "You planned a public spectacle. You staged a theft. You risked the wrath of the Commission to create a distraction. A distraction requires a purpose."

He turned his head slightly, his cold eyes sweeping over the massive exhibition hall. He looked at the heavy oak doors leading to the lobby. He looked at the catering staff frozen near the kitchens. And then, he looked at the high, vaulted windows overlooking the private parking garage.

"Marcus," Luciano commanded, his American accent cutting through the quiet.

A massive, broad-shouldered bodyguard in a dark suit stepped forward instantly from the crowd. "Yes, Boss."

"Lock down the club," Luciano ordered. "Seal the exits. No one leaves. Shut down the communication grid. If anyone attempts to make a phone call, shoot them."

"Yes, Boss," Marcus nodded, immediately gesturing to the perimeter guards to secure the heavy doors.

"Luciano, please!" Odessa shrieked, scrambling desperately to free her legs from the collapsed trolley. "You are overreacting! There is no conspiracy! It was just a stupid prank!"

"You do not play pranks with my blood," Luciano said coldly.

He looked back down at her, his eyes narrowing into lethal slits. He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out his encrypted smartphone. He tapped a single number and lifted it to his ear.

"Vincenzo," Luciano said into the phone, his volume low and authoritative.

"Yes, Boss," his head of security answered instantly.

"Check the perimeter," Luciano instructed. "Odessa wanted my daughter out of the main hall. That means she expected something to happen inside the hall. Or, she wanted my daughter vulnerable outside of it. Check the vehicles."

A long, tense silence stretched over the phone line.

"Boss," Vincenzo’s voice crackled back, tight with sudden urgency. "We just swept the underground garage. We found a black unmarked van idling near the service exit. It’s loaded with heavy artillery and zip-ties. And we found two of our perimeter guards incapacitated."

The words struck Luciano with the force of a sledgehammer. The petty theft, the public humiliation... it hadn't just been an act of jealousy. It was an extraction plan. They were trying to get Mabel separated from her father's immediate protection so a hit squad could grab her in the confusion.

"Secure the van," Luciano ordered, his voice dropping to a terrifying, dead calm. "Bring the driver to the basement holding cells. Alive."

He hung up the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. He turned his cold, sharp eyes back to his cousin.

"You were going to sell her," Luciano whispered, the sheer, sociopathic audacity of the act dropping the temperature of the room to absolute zero.
