Chapter 1

The private benefit inside the Mafia-owned fencing club was a masterclass in untouchable wealth and controlled violence. Bright video colors saturated the expansive exhibition hall, illuminated by natural, cinematic lighting that poured through the massive skylights. There was no yellow tint to muddy the crisp, pristine atmosphere; every polished wood floorboard and gleaming foil blade reflected a pure, brilliant white. The room buzzed with the low, commanding voices of white American adults, their sharp American accents cutting through the ambient hum of privilege. Capos, lieutenants, and elite bodyguards stood in strategic clusters, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the immaculate lighting. At the center of this dangerous ecosystem was Luciano Moretti.
At forty-nine years old, Luciano was the undisputed head of the organization. Powerful, deeply masculine, and intimidating, he radiated the kind of authority that made hardened criminals lower their eyes. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders flawlessly, a heavy family signet ring resting on his finger. An expensive wristwatch peeked out from his impeccably pressed dress shirt cuff, and his polished leather shoes gleamed in the cinematic light. He stood near the edge of the exhibition strip, watching a pair of elite fencers spar, but his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes missed nothing in his territory.
Across the vast hall, simmering with a dark, venomous energy, stood Odessa Moretti. At forty-one years old, Luciano’s cousin was a woman consumed by a vicious, calculating ambition. Odessa wore a luxurious, floor-length formal gown, draped in heavy diamond jewelry and glittering rings. She carried a sleek designer clutch, her high heels digging impatiently into the polished wood floor. Beside her stood her brother, Grant Moretti, forty-four years old and a senior Mafia associate. Grant wore an incredibly expensive tailored suit, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes.
"The old guard is restless, Odessa," Grant murmured, his American accent respectful but laced with tension. "Luciano's new directives on the northern ports are cutting into their margins. They are looking for a reason to push back."
"They don't need a reason, Grant; they need a catalyst," Odessa replied, her voice smooth but lined with steel. "Luciano believes he is untouchable because he sits at the head of the table. He believes his bloodline is secure. We just need to remind the Commission that he is distracted by his domestic responsibilities."
"You mean the girl," Grant said, his eyes drifting away from the fencing strip and landing on a tiny figure near the catering tables.
Odessa was looking at Mabel Moretti. The four-year-old girl, Luciano’s beloved daughter, was a vision of innocence in the den of wolves. Mabel wore an elegant charity dress, a soft white cardigan, thick tights, and delicate flats. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with excitement as she carried a small formal purse, feeling very grown-up at the fancy party. Unaware of the hatred burning in her older cousin's eyes, Mabel took a hesitant step toward a tray of sparkling juices, her small hand reaching out.
Odessa’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She tightened her grip on her designer clutch and suddenly marched across the polished floor, leaving her brother behind. She moved with a terrifying, purposeful speed, her diamonds flashing in the bright light.
"Excuse me," Odessa said loudly, her voice cutting through the polite chatter of the nearby guests.
Before Mabel could even register the older woman's presence, Odessa lunged forward. With a sudden, terrifying burst of violence, Odessa violently grabbed Mabel’s small formal purse.
"Hey!" Mabel cried out in surprise, her tiny hands struggling uselessly against Odessa's grip.
Odessa did not hesitate. In front of the entire benefit, she ripped the purse from the four-year-old's hands and turned it upside down. She dumped every item—a few colorful candies, a tiny hairbrush, and a small toy horse—directly onto the polished floor.
"What are you doing?" Mabel sobbed, tears instantly welling in her bright blue eyes.

Ignoring the weeping child, Odessa dropped the empty purse and forcefully grabbed the edges of Mabel’s soft cardigan, shoving her hands roughly into the frightened girl’s pockets.
"My diamond brooch is missing," Odessa declared loudly, her voice projecting with absolute, undeniable malice to the stunned crowd. "Search the little thief!"
