Chapter 2

The exhibition hall was meticulously arranged to accommodate both the sporting event and the high-society guests. Along the far wall stood a tall freestanding fencing-mask rack, loaded heavily with padded white masks, lightweight chest protectors, canvas glove bags, and neatly rolled practice jackets. Nearby stood a rolling scoring-equipment trolley, its metal shelves holding analog scoring boxes, coiled reel cables, foam practice targets, lightweight score paddles, and padded equipment sleeves. The bright, cinematic lighting caught the edge of every piece of equipment, casting sharp shadows against the pristine walls.
Mabel stood frozen, tears streaming down her fair, rosy cheeks, as Odessa’s manicured hands roughly patted down her small cardigan. The four-year-old’s American accent was a breathless, terrified whimper as she shrank away from the aggressive older woman.
"I didn't take anything!" Mabel cried, her tiny body trembling violently.
"Liars always deny it," Odessa sneered, her voice carrying across the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. She looked up at the surrounding capos and guests, ensuring she had a captivated audience. "This is what happens when you let children run wild among adults. They have no respect for property."
The surrounding guests, bodyguards, and capos froze. The conversations in the immediate vicinity died instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension. Accusing a child of theft was a massive violation of social etiquette, but publicly assaulting and humiliating the daughter of the Mafia boss was an act of suicidal treason.
Luciano Moretti, who had been watching the sparring match from beside the exhibition strip, abruptly stopped clapping. His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes snapped toward the catering tables. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the scene with painful clarity: his cousin standing triumphantly over his daughter, and his four-year-old child crumpled in fear.
Luciano did not scream. He did not curse. The complete, terrifying stillness that washed over his deeply masculine features was far more dangerous than any outward display of rage.
He immediately crossed the room. His tailored dark three-piece suit moved with a fluid, predatory grace. His polished leather shoes clicked against the wood floor in a rapid, relentless rhythm. The sea of white American adults, all adorned in their expensive gala attire, parted instantly to let him through. They recognized the lethal aura radiating from their Boss.
Luciano reached them in seconds. He completely ignored Odessa, dropping gracefully to his knees beside his daughter. He reached out, his strong, capable hands gently lifting Mabel safely into his arms. He stood back up, pulling the weeping child firmly behind his broad, protective back.
"I've got you, sweetheart. I am right here," Luciano murmured, his deep voice softening into a tone of absolute, protective paternal love.
Mabel clung desperately to Luciano’s suit jacket, peeking out from behind his leg. She looked up at her father through her tears, her rosy face stained with distress.
"Daddy," Mabel sobbed, her voice hitching with a devastating, heartbroken hiccup. "I didn't take anything. I promise."
"I know you didn't," Luciano whispered fiercely, his eyes darkening into a storm of violent intent. "You are a Moretti. You do not steal."
Luciano stood tall, his commanding presence casting a long shadow over the immediate area. He turned his cold, sharp gaze slowly toward his cousin.
Odessa did not back down. Driven by a twisted sense of superiority and a desperate need to execute her plan, she pointed a manicured finger directly toward the main exit of the club.
"Throw her out," Odessa commanded coldly, her voice dripping with aristocratic arrogance. "Before she steals again."
As Odessa gestured aggressively toward the door, her sudden, jerky movement dislodged the sleek designer clutch tucked under her arm.
The expensive bag slipped from her grasp. It struck the polished wood floor with a sharp, heavy thud. The clasp popped open upon impact.

And there, tumbling out of Odessa's own clutch, the missing diamond brooch slid directly across the polished surface, coming to a dead stop mere inches from Luciano's leather shoes.
The entire hall went completely, deathly silent.
