Chapter 9

Vivian returned two days later.
No entourage.
No performance.
She walked into my study and looked at Elena’s portrait without greeting it.
That told me enough.
“She pushed me out.”
“Explain.”
After Elena won the clinic land, she began gaining enormous influence inside Sterling.
Families loved her.
Staff trusted her.
I trusted her.
Vivian had been running several community businesses at the time.
Elena discovered those businesses were quietly using Sterling money to cover losses.
Not theft.
Bad management hidden through family accounts.
Elena told me.
I removed Vivian from financial authority.
She left for Charleston.
I remembered.
What I did not remember was ever asking Vivian how it felt.
I decided Elena was right.
Vivian was embarrassed.
End of story.
For me.
Not her.
“She humiliated me.”
I shook my head.
“She told me the truth.”
“In front of you.”
“Yes.”
“My brother.”
“Yes.”
Vivian laughed.
“You always chose her.”
There.
Old sibling wound.
Twenty years old.
Still bleeding.
“And now?”
She looked away.
“When Maribel complained Owen could never breathe beneath Elena’s memory, I understood.”
So she helped.
Not to destroy Lena.
Not even to destroy Owen.
To puncture the legend of Elena Sterling.
She wanted someone to know the clinic began with a gambling table.
“Did you know Maribel planned the game?”
“Eventually.”
“Did you stop her?”
“No.”
“Did you know Lena’s treatment fund would be used?”
Vivian’s face changed.
“No.”
I believed her.
That did not absolve her.
“You gave an angry woman half a truth because you wanted my dead wife embarrassed.”
She flinched.
“I wanted you to admit Elena hurt people too.”
I looked at her.
“She did.”
Vivian froze.
There.
Maybe she had waited twenty years for resistance.
Instead I gave truth.
“Elena could be ruthless.”
I continued.
“She exposed you without protecting your dignity.”
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“That doesn’t make hiding losses right.”
She nodded.
Both.
Again.
Complexity.
Then I asked:
“Was ruining Lena worth finally hearing me say that?”
Vivian broke.
“No.”
Good.
That was where repair could begin.
Not with Elena becoming villain.
May you like
Not Vivian becoming innocent.
With one dead woman allowed to become human again.
